According to a study published in Social Science Computer Review at @SageJournals, "How Algorithms Promote Self-Radicalization: Audit of TikTok’s Algorithm Using a Reverse Engineering Method", the detrimental effects of personalized recommendation algorithms on mainstream social media platforms were empirically proven. In the study, through an audit of TikTok's recommendation algorithm via reverse engineering, researchers derived that left & right wing accounts continued to be recommended increasingly extremist content, effectively confining users to a "self-radicalization loop". Thus demonstrating the power of content recommendation algorithm in increasing polarization around the world.

The corresponding finding demonstrates the problem of ideological segregation on mainstream social media platforms, and the need for more impartiality in content recommendation.
