Women simply aren’t safe in the UK. A young woman was walking home from Cardiff city centre on May 12, 2024 when she realised a man was behind her. This man was Fawaz Alsamaou, a 33 year old Syrian asylum seeker. He grabbed her, sexually assaulted and attempted to strangle her under a railway bridge. The woman fought back and managed to escape. He was found after a Crimewatch appeal showing him stalking her on CCTV. In October 2025, he was sentenced to 3 years and 1 month for the assault and 16 months for strangling her (but that is to be served concurrently). So, no effective time at all for the strangulation. The judge said the crime was “horrible” and he hoped the man would be deported after his sentence finishes but Alsamaou is highly likely to be back on the streets in early 2027 and not deported at all. This woman’s life has changed forever. She is unlikely to ever feel safe again.
