Today was one of those rare and lovely days in which i was able to scratch the itch that is the affliction known to all collectors - i picked up a piece that I've been low-key hoping to snag for many years, from a friend. Back in Jan '23, i was introduced to the geometric art of @rickacrane by @chrismaddern, @christine_hall and the team at Floor (pre- @rally_xyz), as part of a series of 12 pieces by notable artists, combining jpegs, skins and mastheads for the Floor app. I really liked several of the artists and have since bought pieces from various - but I quickly fell in love with Rick (Crane)'s work, which remains how I see the Floor/Rally app to this day. Minters of all 12 of the Floor art pieces could choose to get one piece printed, so i picked Rick's Oneirism, DayDream (framed here, on the right). Some time later, i got to know Rick a little through the superb @TheBuildersDao and Rick kindly arranged for me to get a second piece printed. So, despite not owning one of the 12 nfts, i opted for Watch Your Step, one of Rick's early pieces on eth mainnet (left hand frame). Since then, none have been listed, to my knowledge. I've put in bids periodically when i've had some spare eth and, understandably, no-one budged. Today, the estimable @StudioCaptain1 - another excellent artist met via the DAO (and later at NFT Paris, RIP) kindly agreed to part ways with his copy, which is now vaulted. Thank you my friend. So, not only do i get to look at this daily above my desk, but i'm delighted to feel like I truly now own it. If you're interested in Rick's work, check out the linktree in the first comment. This whole article is excellent. Thanks @AustinGrier1 for sending it to me. A few thoughts: 1) This market reminds me a lot of the car market. We've moved from gas (trad) to hybrid (art basel), but the masses aren't ready for fully electric (digital) because the infrastructure (display tech) isn't close to ready yet 2) So in response the artists here have impressively taken the intermediate step of focusing on hybrid and the success we had at AB validates that move Personal note: Seems to me that hybrid is the winning formula at large trad art shows; I personally find physicals cumbersome and even annoying at times. Let's explore How It All Started Alexana didn't exactly dive headfirst into Web3. Her journey was more like... testing the waters, getting out, then eventually wading back in when the timing felt right. Back in 2019, a friend tried convincing her to invest in crypto. She gave it a shot, but staying up all night watching charts? Yeah, that wasn't her vibe. She decided to sit it out for a while. Fast forward to 2022-2023, and suddenly everything started clicking into place. Friends were launching artistic projects left and right. Phygital fashion was becoming a thing. Decentraland hosted Digital Fashion Week. As someone who'd been designing clothing and creating visual art, Alexana felt like the universe was basically screaming at her to jump in. So she did. She started showing up to events, filming content, and actually getting involved in communities. Her first big moment? Getting interviewed by Crypto Girl on a Twitter Space. She talked about her art journey and even led an impromptu art therapy session. That's when Crypto Girl told her she should own the title "phygital artist" and honestly, it was perfect. Then she discovered Mad Lads, and everything exploded in the best way possible. Videos, events, exhibitions, and now she's building entire metaverse experiences. What She's Working On Right Now Alexana's got her hands full with some seriously cool projects: “Ghost Town” is her baby right now it's this narrative mystery quest game in @decentraland that just won first place at a Decentraland hackathon (she built it with her teammate DusNufus). They're working on Level 2, upgrading the graphics, and expanding the story. She also created in collaboration with @metariverz a permanent interactive art exhibition « Touch the grass & meet the sun » that is hidden in a spooky maze. It is located in Decentraland at metarivers.dcl.eth Beyond that, she's turning her physical art and clothing designs into NFTs and 3D wearables. And getting ready to launch it. Also she’s doing weekly Throwback Friday content for the Mad Lads and Backpack communities, and she's part of @shefiorg Season 15. For SheFi students they got the land at Decentraland to build and currently she is working on building a hangout place with cinema to organize a screenings. She also building a personal portfolio hub to pull everything together in one place. What Makes Her Different Here's the thing about Alexana: She has this endless curiosity and what feels like an ocean of ideas constantly flowing. She can work solo and crush it, but she genuinely loves collaborating with others. She's never about competition it's always about lifting each other up. Her superpowers? Storytelling through video and filmmaking, actually finishing what she starts (even if life gets in the way, she always comes back to it), and she genuinely cares about how her work affects people. Ethics matter to her. She's also got this background in charity work animal rescue and social projects helping children from orphanages and she dreams about bringing that heart into her future Web3 projects. The Highlights Reel Let's talk wins: 1. First place at the @decentraland Hackathon with Ghost Town 2. Her artwork "Crypto, day 1 vs day 365" was selected by The Builders DAO @TheBuildersDao and exhibited in Monaco at WAIB Summit @waibsummit 3. Exhibited at NFT Paris side event (NFT Fest x WAIB Summit) 4. Built the "Touch the Grass & Meet the Sun" interactive exhibition plus inside the maze created with MetaRivers @metariverz 5. Invited speaker at AVATalks 6. Filmed Mad Lads/Backpack community moments during NFT Paris and Paris Blockchain Week @MadLads. @Backpack 7. Named "Lassie of the Week" by the Mad Lads community (which came at the perfect time during a rough week) 8. Helped organize that epic Solana Breakpoint Afterparty in Bali you know, the one with yoga, surfing, boxing, fireworks, and that iconic skeleton photo spot @after_bp 9. She's happy to be part of the @MonkeDAO and the @alldomains ambassador program 10. Currently part of @shefiorg Season 15 Where She's Headed For Alexana, Web3 isn't just about the tech or the money. She sees it as this playground where innovation has no limits where art, ethics, and real-world impact can actually come together. She's dreaming about more projects that matter on a deeper level: animal welfare initiatives, education programs, helping children. She wants to expand Ghost Town and create new immersive stories. She's thinking about cinematic experiences in the metaverse and connecting with people who value creativity, kindness, and making positive change over feeding their egos.
