It worked. Temperatures hit 49 degrees shortly after a gaggle of fuzzy, menacing monsters invaded the St. Clair-Superior neighborhood to send old man winter into a nursing home. They were the main attraction in the Cleveland Kurentovanje Parade - the final blast in the Slovenian Mardi Gras, whose roots go back to pagan times. They kurenti - mythical creatures that summon spring and fertility - were joined by Krampuses, St. Nick, macabre masqueraders and a babushka-wearing mutant. Cleveland is one of the rare places in the U.S. that celebrates Kurentovanje.
