A short debate in almost empty Lords this evening on the rise of anti-Semitism. Grim backdrop - the Commons descending into a nasty, sectarian mood debating entirely performative motions on ceasefire and ugly allegations of physical intimidation poisoning democratic procedures. Small rays of hope worth noting - like the tale of a non-Jewish guy who left work to scrape off the Palestine sticker from the Star of David on Amy Winehouse's statue. The problem is the 20mph limit as well as the way it's policed. It's fine on narrow residential streets or around schools, but not on A or B roads, where it simply reflects the wrong balance between safety and mobility. Of course this can't be seen in isolation: the obsession with LTNs, with bus and cycle lanes, and with putting in traffic lights every couple of hundred yards, is also a major part of the problem. Incidentally one little-commented-upon side effect of such measures is that they make cities *less* friendly to pedestrians, as we must navigate bafflingly complex junctions, dodge bikes or scooters coming from all directions, and be increasingly corralled behind barriers and light controlled crossings that give priority to buses and cycles. These are all symptoms of the current anti-progress mentality. Western societies are, for the first time, actively trying to make travel slower and more complicated.
