It's not just embarrassing that this would come from an MP, it's embarrassing that this would come from an adult. What does she mean? That it doesn't matter that Gail's in Archway has twice, since opening, had its windows smashed and been daubed in anti-Semitic graffiti? Is that funny? Is it a suitable opportunity for a little culture wars jibe — one that also hopes to demonstrate how 'working class' she is? Jews are talking and preparing to leave the country, because they are increasingly in doubt that the majority of good people in Britain will step up to defend a minority. Yet Zarah — elected to serve — chooses to join Jonathan Liew and Katharine Viner in their belittling of these fears. This is anti-Semitism, hiding in plain sight.

📹 Jonathan Liew's article in The Guardian dismissed smashed windows and anti-Semitic graffiti at Gail's bakery in Archway as 'small acts of petty symbolism'. The newspaper and its editors are shockingly oblivious to the symbolism of such acts. In this video a campaigner who was at the Our Fight protest outside The Guardian, explains why the racist vandalism  at Gail's resonates so starkly with him and other Jews in Britain. 📹 After The Guardian published an article trying to downplay the significance of anti-Semitic attacks on a North London branch of Gail's, Our Fight organised a protest outside their head office. Jonathan Liew's comment piece claimed that pro-Gazan campaigners have become so powerless that they were reduced to "small acts of petty symbolism" — such as smashing a cafe's windows and daubing it with anti-Semitic graffiti. What he didn't say was that these activists had invented a relationship between Gail's and Israel — a strawman — in an attempt to justify their racist vandalism. Broken windows, anti-Semitic graffiti; such acts are neither small nor petty. But they are symbolic. They are evocative of another era — one in which Nazis organised boycotts of Jewish shops, the smashing of windows and burning of synagogues, and ultimately the attempted destruction of the Jews of Europe. In a Britain that has seen Jews murdered outside a Manchester Synagogue, waking up to reports that a bakery has been daubed with anti-Semitic slogans and had its windows broken — not once, but twice — is certainly going to lead to both justifiable fear and a steely resolve. Yet The Guardian chose not only to ignore such concerns, but in Liew's article they decided to go further — and minimise them. By trivialising anti-Semitism The Guardian, its journalists and its editors give it cover. And as a consequence they are contributing to its rise. This is anti-Semitism in plain sight, and it's why we organised our protest. #pettysymbolism #istandwithgails Thumbnail courtesy Elliott Franks. youtu.be/IfwjoUxd1vo

Campaign Against Antisemitism
Members of the Jewish community and their allies gathered outside The Guardian’s office in central London to protest an outrageous recent column about Gail’s and the newspaper’s dreadful coverage of matters of Jewish interest. We joined the protest, organised by @OurFightUk, and asked those in the crowd – including @JoshxHowie and Mark Birbeck of @OurFightUK – why they felt it was important to take a stand.
Campaign Against Antisemitism@antisemitism

We have joined the protest right now outside The Guardian's offices in London following the newspaper’s recent ludicrous and dreadful column portraying Gail’s as some sort of Jewish supremacist aggressor crushing independent Arab business in Archway. This was just the latest in @guardian’s persistent hostile output that has the effect of encouraging animosity towards Jews. Our polling of the Jewish community shows that, among newspapers, The Guardian scores the worst, with nearly seven in ten – 69% – of British Jews describing its coverage of matters of Jewish interest as unfavourable. Sadly, this newspaper has travelled so far that it may well now regard this as a badge of honour.

@BlondShelley @guardian @OurFightUk @jonathanliew Understand the point but I urge you to expressly name antizionism as the new incarnation of Jew hatred. We have to name it and stigmatise it so that it becomes as socially unacceptable as antisemitism. Otherwise it will continue to be misdiagnosed as good faith social activism.

J’ACCUSE @guardian 🚨‼️ I proudly stood today alongside Jews, our allies and @OurFightUk outside the Guardian offices to protest against the truly irresponsible ‘journalism’ from @jonathanliew who described the presence of Gail’s Bakery in Archway as ‘heavy-handed high street aggression’ simply because it was originally founded by an Israeli Jew and that there is a Palestinian Cafe situated around the corner. We seem to be reaching a point where antisemitism is being completely normalised under the guise of anti-Zionism, even within institutions that are supposed to be trustworthy, the fighters for good and to be held in high esteem.  At a time when antisemitic incidents are rising, hate marches are taking over our cities, Jews are daily faced with violent incidents and are seriously considering having to leave the UK, journalists have a responsibility to write with care, not in ways that risk fuelling hostility or intimidation toward Jewish communities. History shows us where this can lead. The Holocaust did not begin with the murder of six million Jews, it began with rhetoric, blood libel, boycotts and the systematic targeting and exclusion of Jewish businesses and people. Words matter THE GUARDIAN AND JONATHAN LIEW SHOULD DO BETTER. @joshxhowie @kurpapatel @PatrickChristys

📣 VIOLENT ANTI-SEMITISM WINS SUPPORT FROM BIRMINGHAM CHARITY AND EVENTBRITE      IMMEDIATE RELEASE Last week a new hate movement aiming to launch in a Birmingham community venue had its meeting cancelled. Sadly, the booking was not withdrawn by The Old Print Works because the organisation holding the meeting — the Anti-Zionist Movement — stated on social media that its founding principles were support for 'armed resistance' and opposition to 'Jewish supremacy'. Nor was the gathering cancelled because the police are now investigating the extremist nature of the group. The cancellation was due to the venue being unable to 'guarantee a safe space...for the event'. Not only did The Old Print Works seem happy to accept a booking from a violent anti-Semitic hate group, but they were then prepared to imply that the real threat was to this same hate group. Despite the first venue pulling out, and a police investigation being underway, a new venue has stepped in to host the extremists — The Moseley Exchange. In addition, the ticketing platform Eventbrite is still happy to promote the event. Mark Birbeck, Our Fight director said: "It is sad for the people of Birmingham that after the Maccabi Tel Aviv ban, the city is playing host to another story with anti-Semitism at its core. We do not believe that the extremist Anti-Zionist Movement represents the ordinary people of Birmingham, and neither do we feel that organisations such as The Old Print Works or Moseley Community Development Trust — both of whom have shown support for AZM — reflect this great city's values." "As anti-Semitism is exploding across the globe, charities, venues and platforms need to ask themselves whether they should be playing host to groups like AZM that champion violence against Jews. We will continue to draw attention to the hypocrisy of those who enable such bigotry, as well as the extremists themselves." 📰 "The article’s standfirst was also removed. It had read: 'A smashed window here, a provocative sticker there. In an age when protest feels increasingly meaningless, it’s no wonder that acts of petty symbolism are on the rise.'" Jonathan Liew's article may have been amended, but the fact that editors at The Guardian let it through in the first place is indicative of the complacency about the rise in anti-Semitism. Good coverage of the Our Fight protest outside The Guardian head office. thetimes.com/article/fc9f0e…

📰 "Bring on the bunfight! Pro-Israel protesters line up to deliver Gail’s cakes to Guardian editor" Coverage in The Jewish Chronicle of our protest today outside The Guardian, in response to its publication of an article that minimises rising anti-Semitism in the UK. Jonathan Liew's article described smashed windows and anti-Semitic graffiti at a newly opened Gail's bakery in Archway as 'small acts of petty symbolism'. So we delivered some petty symbolism to Katherine Viner. thejc.com/news/bring-on-…

Gail’s bags - emblazoned with the words ‘a small act of petty symbolism’ (what Guardian writer Jonathan Liew called a Gail’s having its windows smashed in) are left outside the Guardian’s office. How very ‘heavy handed high street aggression’.

🚨 Protest Guardian’s sanitisation of anti-Semitism Following a recent article by Jonathon Liew — which sought to sanitise anti-Semitic attacks on Gail's by claiming smashed windows were “petty symbolism” — Our Fight campaigners and Archway residents will be protesting outside the Guardian’s office tomorrow, to expose this dangerous trend of trivialisation. 📍 The Guardian, Kings Place, 90 York Way, London, N1 9GU 🕐 1pm 🗓️ March 18th, 2026 “This is not just about the shocking attacks on Gail’s”, said Mark Birbeck, founder and director of Our Fight. “This is about a national newspaper making anti-Semitism acceptable in the UK by saying that Jews are exaggerating it. We’ve seen Jews murdered outside a Manchester synagogue, violent assaults and intimidation outside a Jewish-owned restaurant in Notting Hill, Jewish football fans herded into a ‘Jew pen’ next to Villa Park, and now a campaign of aggression aimed at Gail’s in Archway; and yet the Guardian’s editors chose to run a comment piece that praised the food at a nearby Palestinian restaurant, and called attacks on Jews ‘petty symbolism’.” The Gail’s branch in Archway was daubed with grafitti the night before it opened, and a week later its windows were smashed. After this second attack local resident Eve Kay collaborated with Our Fight to organise a Breakfast at Gail’s event, to show solidarity and to encourage other locals to demonstrate that they would not be intimidated. Eve said: “I’ve lived in Archway for over 23 years and I feel like these kinds of violent attacks in the dead of night on Gail’s is nothing more than hideous Jew hatred. No other ethnicity or nationality has ever been singled out like this before. In the last few days we’ve seen a poster campaign take off against Gail’s as well, so for The Guardian to present all of this as ‘petty’ is shocking — they are fuelling anti-Semitism by trying to play it down.” Email: press@OurFight.uk Photos: Eve Kay and Elliott Franks

You're clearly an idiot. You're trying to say it's 'about a cake shop'. But the shop is daubed with anti-Semitic slogans, and the windows are smashed. Are you seriously saying that a cake shop in Devon serving cream teas would suffer the same fate? So it's not about what the shop sells, it's about what has happened to it. As for the ethnic or national question, the quote relates to this country. Are Nigerian or Portuguese or Korean or any other national's UK businesses (or even 'cake shops') smashed up and daubed with racist graffiti? So to make the point again — you are prepared to overlook this targeting of Jews and businesses with an imaginary Israeli connection because you are deluded by the 'genocide lie'. This is why it's increasingly like the 1930s — because once you believe the anti-Semitic lies, you will start to justify any action. And yes, this means that society has fallen; you are prepared to put aside niceties such as 'don't smash the windows of a cake shop and cover it in red paint', because you have fallen for some greater myth.
