Following a series of mail thefts, Seattle Division Postal Inspectors launched an investigation that resulted in the recovery of over 30 pounds of stolen mail and put a serial mail thief behind bars.
In November 2023, the Salem, OR Police Department contacted inspectors about a series of mail thefts in the area. After reviewing the evidence, inspectors realized the thefts were likely being committed by the same person or crew.
Inspectors obtained nighttime security footage showing a man using a postal key to open neighborhood mailboxes and steal mail. Inspectors also learned about suspicious transactions at various ATMs in the area. Surveillance footage from the ATMs showed the same man making deposits and withdrawals using stolen debit cards from the mail.
During the investigation, inspectors identified Ross Sierzega as the man seen on camera. After obtaining a search warrant, law enforcement searched his apartment, where they found over 30 pounds of stolen mail, two lock cores for cluster mailboxes, counterfeit postal keys, and burglary tools, along with various checks, bank cards, and financial documents not in Sierzega’s name.
Following his arrest, Sierzega pleaded guilty to bank fraud and aggravated identity theft. He was sentenced to 30 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release.

Today, the #FBI, Europol and law enforcement agencies around the world executed a takedown of LeakBase, one of the largest cybercriminal platforms, seizing users’ accounts, posts, credit details, private messages and IP logs for evidentiary purposes. Together with our partners, we are sending a message that no criminal is truly anonymous online and removing an easy point of access to stolen information on American businesses and citizens.
The FBI will continue to defend the homeland by dismantling the key services that #cybercriminals use to facilitate their attacks. justice.gov/opa/pr/united-…
