Many businesses confuse attention with ownership. Views are attention. Followers are access. An email list is ownership. Know the difference.

The smartest use of social media is not to collect likes. It’s to turn strangers into direct contacts: Email subscribers WhatsApp leads Community members That’s real leverage.

A large social following with no email list is risky. One algorithm update can cut your reach overnight. Build assets, not just visibility.

Your followers are not your audience. They are the platform’s audience. You’re only borrowing attention. Ownership starts when you move them to a list you control.

Every piece of content you post on a "rented" platform should have one other job beyond engagement: Move a portion of that audience to a platform you control If you aren't converting followers into subscribers, you're just providing free content to help the platform's stock price

If your audience disappears when your account gets suspended, you never owned the audience. Build channels no platform can take from you.

Before adopting any practice, ask two questions. Under what conditions does this work? Do those conditions exist in my market, at my stage, with my resources?

Most entrepreneurs follow best practices the way students follow textbooks. Without questioning whether the exam they are studying for is the same one everyone else sat.

The principle behind most best practices is sound. The execution is context-dependent in ways the person sharing it rarely explains, often because they do not fully understand which elements of their own context made it work.

Build trust before you sell. Correct principle. But in markets where cash is tight and the sales cycle is long, The business that spends twelve months building trust before asking for money is often the business that does not survive to make the ask.

Niche down until your audience is specific Sound advice in large markets with high search volume In a market where the total addressable audience is already small, niching to the wrong level leaves you with a message no one searches for and a business with no one to sell to.

Post consistently and your audience will grow. This was true when platforms had lower content volume and higher organic reach. In 2026, consistency without a distribution strategy produces consistent invisibility.

A best practice tells you what worked for a specific person, in a specific market, at a specific moment. It does not tell you whether any of those conditions match yours.

The entrepreneurs who grow fastest are not the ones who are right most often. They are the ones who find out they are wrong fastest and adjust before the error compounds.

@photomatt @WordPress Hi Mr Matt, I think WordPress is really sleeping on the adoption of AI to develop the platforms website building capabilities, or is there any work being done on this by Automattic or 3rd party, like a Lovable for WP that works well with Page builders,Zipwp by Astra sucks...

Hows the new ad manager launch going @elonmusk and @nikitabier ? Reason I ask is because I've been running ads online since 2007. I have accounts with 14 different online ad networks. I've spent over $10m on Internet ads, have spoken on stages about Internet ads from Las Vegas to Australia. Over the last 10yrs I've taught 14,000+ businesses how to run paid ads online. I know a thing or two about this business. I know the top players, the influencers, and the money makers. I know what the end consumer wants, more than they even know what they want. Literally. I haven't had a job in 20yrs so I might be a little tough to manage, but I can guarantee you'll have the fastest growing ad platform in the industry in 18mos and break into the big 5 in 36mos, if you let me lead this transition. I specifically know what it's going to take to beat Google, Meta, Amazon, and TikTok. You let Bing beat you. Bro... 🤦‍♂️ that's a bad look. Lastly, this first email you sent... ain't it! If you maintain this direction I promise you'll continue to stay out of the top 5. It's time x ads stops playing a $2B game and starts playing a $100B game. 💪💰 You know where to find me.
