@AmPaschal01 Hot take: The only long-term use case of LLMs in SE is as a tool to develop arbitrary transformations from one representation to another.

Everyday, I keep getting amazed by how useful LLMs can be in research… A research assistant I’m working with wanted to work on moving experiment reports from JSON/CSV formats to HTML for easier analysis. He, at first, estimated it’ll take a few days.

My student Berk Çakar co-led a paper at @asiaccs2025 that provides a Systematization of Knowledge (SOK) on Regex Denial of Service. This paper includes a literature review as well as an "engineering review" of regex engine changes. Read more: davisjam.medium.com/sok-a-literatu…

A team of #PurdueECE students has built a record-breaking machine that solves a RUBIK’S Cube faster than the blink of an eye 👁️! Congrats to Brock Berta, Aden Hurd, Junpei Ota, & Matthew Patrohay on this remarkable achievement! Come see the machine today (Fri) until 3 in MSEE!

My student Kelechi Kalu led a paper on software signing to USENIX Security'25. It was a great qualitative complement to my group's quantitative study at S&P'24. Kelechi's blog post writeup is available here: davisjam.medium.com/an-industry-in…

Following a thorough investigation, the Program Chairs (PCs) decided to desk-reject 19 papers authored by confirmed highly irresponsible reviewers, which would have been accepted otherwise, in accordance with the previously communicated CVPR 2025 policies. 2/2

#CVPR2025 Area Chairs (ACs) identified a number of highly irresponsible reviewers, those who either abandoned the review process entirely or submitted egregiously low-quality reviews, including some generated by large language models (LLMs). 1/2

@TheDavisJam I don’t look at the GRE scores at all. I don’t even notice if the applicants submitted the GRE scores or not.

Advice: If you are good at standardized tests and are applying to STEM grad school, then you should take the GRE and include your scores.

@xwang_lk Many schools no longer require GRE. That means the people who submit high scores are at an advantage, because we have some quantitative means of comparing the applicants.

@TheDavisJam Or only apply to schools that don't require GRE. Personally, I find GRE useless, the English part is no use after the test, and the math is just too easy.

The US is a representative democracy. The legislative branch is constituted of representatives who (at least nominally) act in the interests of their constituents. It is the duty of US citizens to inform their representatives of their views. Today I did so. Did you?
