So rather than use the actual figures for economic growth, which show Britain holding up reasonably well in a lacklustre field, you prefer to depend on theoretical modelling, not just for the future but for years that have already happened. Modelling which is open to serious criticism. I notice Goldman Sachs seems to have taken down the study to which you refer (or perhaps you have a link). Nor did you answer my question. Time to move on.
Ben Judah@b_judah

▶️ You will see Brexiteers cling to the argument that because the 🇬🇧 grew recently at a similar rate to 🇫🇷 and 🇩🇪 there is no Brexit damage. ▶️ But economists at @GoldmanSachs, @nberpubs and others are not measuring the outcome but rather modelling what 🇬🇧 itself would have achieved had it not done Brexit: i.e. no new trade barriers and no new red tape with our larges market. ▶️ Every serious organisation that has modelled this has found a significant and growing Brexit drag on where the 🇬🇧 economy like have been otherwise. ▶️ What they are saying is we’ve weakened the 🇬🇧 economy to be like 🇫🇷 and 🇩🇪 when we should be growing much faster. ▶️ This is what @nberpubs found in its 2025 paper — “The Economic Impact of Brexit” by Bloom, Bunn, Mizen, Smietanka & Thwaites: 1️⃣ “By 2025, Brexit had reduced 🇬🇧 GDP by 6% to 8%, with the impact accumulating gradually over time” 2️⃣ “Investment was reduced by between 12% and 18%” 3️⃣ “Employment by 3% to 4% and productivity by 3% to 4%” 4️⃣ “These forecasts were accurate over a 5-year horizon, but they underestimated the impact over a decade” “These large negative impacts reflect a combination of elevated uncertainty, reduced demand, diverted management time, and increased misallocation of resources from a protracted Brexit process.” ▶️ How much has this cost us by these calculations? Some £180–240 billion.

@FactsReason @afneil @afneil Was agreeing with me that the study I quoted, which was initially posted by Ben Judah, was bollocks. Do keep up.

@TheDiggers4 @afneil That’s bollocks. You’re saying being in the Eu would give us American growth but it doesn’t give France and Germany that boost 😂 @afneil is trying to help you … listen to him

@ShippersUnbound Of all the leaders and Parties, Farage and Reform are closest to what Blair is talking about. Polanksi is a lunatic and Starmer probably doesn't understand any of it given he has no interest in policy. And even if he did want to deliver any of it, his Party wouldn't let him.

Further to Blair. Literally every honest sensible person in all the main parties privately agrees with all these propositions: - welfare spending is too high and is throwing good people on the scrapheap - defence spending is too low - the triple lock is unsustainable - without cheap energy we cannot exploit the AI revolution - we should be investing in EVERY form of energy: renewables, nuclear and the North Sea - migration needs to be controlled to boost social cohesion and because the boats look like a huge failure of the state - any new relationship with the EU will be imposed on us until we are stronger and cannot involve the closeness some desire without freedom of movement - we are deeply embedded with America in ways which the public does not understand and cannot be told and however joyous it makes us feel to hate Trump, disengagement at the deep state level is not only wholly unrealistic but also undesirable - Whitehall needs a total overhaul so specific project expertise and political appointees can be brought in quickly Blair basically says all that. The one thing he doesn’t say and which the same group of people agree on is this and it’s something Blair left behind: - judges and quangos have too much power, are unaccountable and without redressing the balance in favour of parliament it is very difficult to do anything big fast - the bare minimum that needs to change in this regard is to reform judicial review and planning law so we can put building and economic growth ahead of newts and NIMBYs None of that above really ought to be up for discussion. It is all common sense but not one of our politicians will publicly say all of it Whatever you think of Blair, engage with what he’s saying not how he makes you feel. The bare minimum we should expect from any leader is that they have an analysis of the current situation and a plan to deal with it which is as coherent and realistic as his intervention. Pretty well every critique I’ve read so far has failed to meet this requirement. Over to Andy and Keir and Kemi and Nigel and Zack and all the others

Big story, with implications for Marcus Rashford, who has enjoyed his time at Nou Camp. Barcelona’s €30m option to buy expires June 15. Hard to see a return to #MUFC - full wages restored due to Champions League. Further exit talks ahead. England dynamic interesting ⬇️
David Ornstein@David_Ornstein

🚨 Barcelona make proposal to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United. Bid for 25yo #NUFC winger €80m + bonuses; no agreement yet as talks over England int’l continue. Interest of other clubs ongoing but #FCBarcelona + #FCBayern strongest @TheAthleticFC nytimes.com/athletic/64314…

@SpecCoffeeHouse He is unhinged. Completely deluded. Restore are all over the place. You have that eloquent chap going viral saying Tory market ideology has helped bring the country to its knees (correct) and Restore are the only Party that can save us, yet their leader is an avid Thatcherite.

On mass deportations, I suggested to Rupert Lowe that Reform have moved a lot closer to Restore’s position in the last year. He told me that he’s ‘not really interested in Reform. I would have helped Nigel become prime minister but I don’t think he is fit to become prime minister. My personal opinion is that he is managed opposition. I think that if you look at the mainstream media, it is now pushing Nigel… so I’m not really interested in Reform’. And his prediction for the by-election? ‘We can win it. Reform’s candidate is poor quality and when our rape gang report comes out in early June, a vote for Labour is a vote for evil.’ Only time will tell. ✍️ David Shipley Article | spectator.com/article/rupert…

@DPJHodges @NiallUKNS You're trying to boost Restore for the same reason you were trying to goad them last week into standing a candidate/campaigning in Makerfield.......to split the right. You might as well apply to be Burnham's campaign manager at this point.

@NiallUKNS To be honest, I fall into the "don't believe" camp at the moment. But as I say I'm starting to hear it from multiple sources. And it's a very high bar for Restore to set.

So again, file under believe or don't believe. But I've now heard from multiple sources inside and outside Restore who say they believe the party is now in with a chance of catching Reform in Makerfield. Going back later this week, so I'll be in a better position to judge.

Scotland has what it takes. Countries like Denmark, Norway, Iceland and Ireland show what can happen when nations make their own choices: stronger economies, fairer societies and happier people. Independence is Scotland’s chance to lower bills, protect our NHS, and put our future where it belongs: in Scotland’s hands.
