Carbon Monoxide (CO) Results from incomplete combustion, especially during idling or low-power settings. Unburned Hydrocarbons (UHCs) Trace amounts of fuel that didn’t fully burn. Particulate Matter (soot, black carbon) Especially from older engines or under inefficient combustion. At High Altitudes: The effect is compounded—emissions like water vapor and NOₓ have different atmospheric impacts depending on altitude. For example: Water vapor can linger and form persistent contrails, potentially affecting cloud formation and Earth's energy balance. NOₓ at cruising altitude can decrease stratospheric ozone and increase tropospheric ozone, both with climate implications. So in essence: jet engines produce CO₂ + H₂O + NOₓ + CO + soot + UHCs, and the environmental effects scale with how, when, and where the plane flies.
