We know that girls are inherently valuable, deserving of rest, and capable of anything. Our mission is to give them space and support to do just that.

Exploring ways to empower girls living in Teshie was one of the first things we did to start The Good Tree off on an informed note 💚 At long last, we are excited to share our research report, the basis on which The Good Tree's approach is built 🌳 📰 drive.google.com/file/d/1PmVu_t…

“Announcement of 3 day Hunger Strike” Friends, I am sure you have all heard news of the decision of the High court to grant me bail on the 4th attempt. I am exceedingly grateful to my lawyers led by the Exceedingly brilliant Dr. @JusticeSremSai . Comrades, over the last few weeks, the various detainees with whom I share my cell, have been brainstorming on various ways by which they can draw the attention of the nation to their plight and the extreme inhumanity of their detention conditions. I am happy to report that just last night, the entire cell voted overwhelmingly and unanimously to declare a 3 day hunger strike to communicate their displeasure over the situation of remand prisoners across our nation’s police cells. It has been decided that the hunger strike will commence today Friday, 18th to Sunday 20th October. The hunger strike is demanding that the country ends the deliberate and longstanding refusal to feed detainees in Police custody. The refusal to feed detainees has created an institutionalized Starvation programme that dehumanizes individuals who by law are innocent and haven’t been found guilty of any crime. In Solidarity with their struggle and demand to be treated as human beings, I have decided to suspend any attempts to procure my own liberty. I will be joining the 3 day Hunger Strike. This hunger strike is not only historic and noble, it is also symbolises the first collective action by remand prisoners to demand a respect for their human rights and collective dignity. I stand with them in calling on well meaning Ghanaians, and the entire nation to declare their solidarity with this protest by announcing a one day national hunger strike, on the last day Sunday 20th October, 2024. My colleagues at Democracy Hub will in the next few days provide further details on the hunger strike. I assure everyone that all the detainees- we are 20 as at the time of this message are fully committed to the strike. All of them take this step aware that the Ghana Police Service will take several punitive steps against them; including arranging for transfers to Nsawam prison or other police cells in order to break the front of the resistance. They are prepared for all repercussions. They are also aware that a war of misinformation will be launched which is to deceive the public. They are asking for your vigilance and discernment. They are calling on the media to fact check every information and press the police to allow the inmates at the Accra Regional Police Headquarters to “Striking Force” cell to speak to the media. Above all, they want Ghanaians to the remember them as humans. They are humans too. I thank you all for your continuous support. None of which I take for granted. I love you all! Shalom.

May this day go terribly for him. If he holds a door may the handle come off and the screws cut his hand. If he eats may the food spill to the floor and the taste be bitter to him. May this new year be 10x as miserable to him as he has made Ghanaians. May joy desert him. Amen.
Gabby Otchere-Darko@GabbyDarko

I wish and pray that the good people of Ghana will buy into your superior vision and make it possible for you to implement your bold solutions for the shared prosperity of Ghanaians in this 4th Industrial Revolution. Happy birthday Mr Vice President. You are, indeed, a good man.

As I revealed on TV3 yesterday, the government officials we are calling on to ban all forms of small scale mining so we end the galamsey mass murder are rather shockingly and defiantly directly incorporating more mining companies and obtaining fresh licenses to mine gold. The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Mpohor, Hon. Ignatius Asaah Mensah registered a sole proprietorship on October 18, 2023 by name JKcem Mining. Hon. Ignatius Asaah Mensah hurriedly applied for a gold mining license on 17th November, 2023. His application was promptly approved by the Minerals Commission and the Lands Minister. His license code is: SSML-T2 12/2024. The Mpohor DCE’s gold mining license gave him the green light to commence gold mining within the Odumase-K9/Mpohor concession on 9th August, 2024. Instructively, the area of this concession is under his jurisdiction as DCE. The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Amenfi East, Hon. Frederick Korankye also registered Kofreze Construction and Engineering Limited on 7th April, 2017. On 17th January, 2023, Hon. Frederick Korankye decided to directly apply for a gold mining license. His application was promptly approved by the Minerals Commission and the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources. The MCE’s license with the code: SSML-AS2 5/2024 allows him to actively mine gold since 21st March, 2024 within Wassa Amenfi East where he serves as MCE. The heads of the metropolitan, municipal and district security councils we are hoping will carry out our demands by banning all forms of small scale mining are themselves active participants in the killer enterprise. One can now better appreciate why there has been no real fight by government against irresponsible mining. It is also obvious that the reason why many people in these mining communities feel so emboldened to continue with their environmental destruction is because they know their “big men” who should stop them are equally guilty. When NPP politicians claim they fear they will lose parliamentary seats, know that is a diversion. The real fear is about the money they will lose as direct beneficiaries. If the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government were serious about confronting the galamsey menace, none of their MMDCEs would be allowed to actively engage in small scale mining, no matter what justification they may create. What a sorry republic! See attached incontrovertible incorporation documents from the Office of the Registrar of Companies and evidence of mining licenses from the Ghana Mining Repository. It is equally depressing and an utter betrayal to additionally observe that on October 3, 2024 while President Akufo-Addo was meeting the leadership of Organised Labour and seeking to talk them out of their consequential and life-saving anti-galamsey strike, his government approved 11 new mining licenses with an October 3, 2024 mining start date. (The same day he was meeting the labour leaders). Details of the 11 companies and their approved licenses plus the 12 fresh licenses recklessly approved in September 2024 are duly attached in the spirit of transparency and accountability. If the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government had any respect for Ghanaians and valued our lives, they would at the very least have long suspended the approval of new licenses as we collectively figure out how to deal with the current existential threat. Clearly, when a government becomes the real enemy, anti-galamsey protesters will be subjected to such disgraceful human right violations as we continue to witness. These traumatizing latest developments should strengthen the resolve of Organised Labour not to back down until their demands are met. Thankfully, Ghanaians have always defeated tyrants, oppressors and plunderers! #FreeTheCitizensNow #StopGalamseyNow

The day a girl is forced into marriage, her entire future is compromised. And yet, each year, 12 million girls are forced into marriage before the age of 18, at a cost to their health, education, safety and opportunity to live a good and healthy life. #PreventGBV #EndVAW
