@virtualangel39 The artist itself needs profit to earn enough to fund another pin or keychain design. If they sell it base price, they won’t be able to afford to get new merch made. Tho, I’m in the minority, but I totally understand why alley artists will price it at double or triple the price.

i think a big factor here is that US artist alley merch is priced for profit while JP fanbooks/derivative doujin are usually passion projects and sold at printing cost (which is the unwritten rule to be able to openly sell them and not get hit by copyright from the official too)

i do wish non-JP artist alleys have a fanbook-oriented culture. i KNOW why people sell charms over fanbooks, i know it's expensive to have comics printed in the US, but i hope artists invest in it at least once. at a con i almost always buy someone's comic over their other merch

As sad as this is, Deviantart's downfall is entirely its own doing. They degraded the site and removed everything that made it good, and that's not even to mention how they eagerly embraced AI despite the backlash they received. Its genuinely nothing like how it was before.

@CartoonsOTMoon Deviantart is extremely tone deaf and doesn’t listen to its community anymore. Freakin’ Neopets does a better job listening to its fanbase, releasing certain items or recalling bad decisions when the uproar is too loud. The need to take notes how to appease their paying customer.
