A lot of people think that those advocating for tougher behaviour systems are cruel and totalitarian. I'd like people to read this thread from a while back, as it tries to show why that's completely inaccurate.

Ok, time for a bit of nuance on the whole behaviour thing, and it starts with the fact that Yes, I think discipline is important Yes, I think rules are important Yes, I think consequences are important BUT Yes, I also absolutely *hate* all of the above. >

@adamboxer1 I agree with you - I guess some students may need counselling. I always think behaviour can tell you a lot. But it doesn’t come at the expense of expectations of behaviour.
Tbh the most interesting bit of your answer is that you got excluded - what did you do?!

One last question: do you think that every child who is removed for disruption and rudeness genuinely needs counselling from someone with a qualification like you mentioned? I was excluded as a child and definitely didn't need counselling, so I'm interested in what you're ballpark % would be. I definitely don't think the child in question needs counselling in this case.

@VallanceTeach A really example of how this is all done is at Limpsfield Grange for example (specialist setting) - everything is clear / set at a high bar but there is flexibility with how that is delivered.

@VallanceTeach Pt1/ I just can’t believe there is a debate tbh. Surely it’s a no brainier to:
✅high expectations
✅clear expectations for staff and students
✅Apply those relevantly to your own setting (flexibility)
✅Make reasonable adjustments if needed but not at behaviour policy expense

This is not good. There are schools where behaviour is so bad that many children are not learning and most leave with no real outcomes. Demonising high standards & criticising *necessary* components of behaviour systems (susp), will take us backwards.

Opinion: turning a school from being bottom 15% for outcomes to top 15% of outcomes is the most impressive feat in the whole of education.
There are a number who have achieved it, and their advice and insight should he sought.

Hopefully @bphillipsonMP will consult those Heads who have transformed a challenging school, from Inadequate to Good/Outstanding (with excellent KS2/KS4 outcomes for disadvantaged students) and ask them what works. Those who have walked the walk+committed their lives to this.

Today marked my last day at the school I trained in, first became a middle leader, and spent 3 years as a senior leader. Incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished at OASP over the past few years and can’t wait for the next chapter at @trinitybrixton.
