Great question - they definitely aren’t done adding. If they don’t go G in rounds 1-3, I’d assume they would go with a vet (Glasgow comes to mind) that could compete with Penning for the starting gig.
I’d liken 2025 to two load-bearing posts going down; losing Penning or Strange to knocking out a stud. Wall might be a little wonky but it’s not collapsing.

@TheKyleDe @wud_eye @mykcanales @Herb2Slay Kyle what happens when a guard goes down and then the lack of oline depth puts back in the same position as 2025?
English

Mike McDaniel has never had two guards grade above 60 in the same year. Not once in five seasons. The Chargers' guard room isn't a hole to fill. It's on brand. Full breakdown with PFF data across every McDaniel OL

@hanse16488 McDaniels offenses averaged 54 pressures less than Herbert’s over the past 5 years. System alone leaves him much, much better protected.

It's fair to wonder if Tua's concussions were a result of OL failures in MIA. Here is a chart to help contextualize the total pressures and pressure rates of McDaniel offenses vs the Chargers over the past five seasons. An AVERAGE of 52 additional pressures allowed for LAC.
English

@TheKyleDe The guards are arguably the worst in the league and Herbert will leave if he gets hit 150 times again !
GUARD IS THE BIGGEST PRIORITY ON THE TEAM
English

@TheKyleDe I appreciate it. Helps me cope. Just wondering what they’re doing with all that cap space and no depth across the Oline

@SanDiegoPete73 @Herb2Slay Definitely should be one of his better units if everyone stays healthy.
English

@TheKyleDe @Herb2Slay He has also, other than a few games of Terron Armstead sprinkled over a few years, had very bad OT play around the guards. I'm not predicting 75 grades, but if Slater & Alt produce at typical 80+ rates & Biadasz is his typical mid-high 60s or better, McDaniel will have a 60+ G.
English

@SanDiegoPete73 It definitely could happen - but I just hope backup center gets attention as well.
English

@TheKyleDe It probably won't make anyone forget the 1995 Dallas Cowboys, but it should be a solid unit. I fully expect a rookie to play the other Guard along w/ Strange.
English

@Daklan17 @cmsinclair I thought so two, but Tua was also on a rookie deal for much of that time, and they didn’t get significant IOL signings during that time…
English

@TheKyleDe @cmsinclair Idk I would imagine the team that has all of their credible offensive playmakers on a rookie deals might mean making sure the entire o line is taken care of, but what do I know
English

@wud_eye @mykcanales @Herb2Slay They also did sign James Daniels to upgrade the guard situation, but he ended up hurt before he could do anything. Those two data points could be an argument that finally came around to upgrading guard… but I still don’t think we should be in panic mode.
English

@TheKyleDe @mykcanales @Herb2Slay Dolphins did eventually draft Savaiinaea. I am wondering what adjustments McDaniel has in mind, given emerging defensive schemes in 2026. It must be remembered also that Penning had a very high RAS out of college. And Hecht at #55 is rich, but it is also a twofer, C & G depth.
English

@jonathanmarcus McDaniel's offenses regularly scored extremely well in pressures allowed. Might just be a Tua thing.

English

@TheKyleDe Maybe that’s why Tua had so many concussions.
English

@mykcanales @Herb2Slay Maybe - but the bigger dropoff was Connor Williams to Liam Eichenburg at center, and whenever Armstead was out.
Hence - I hope they prioritize backup C in the draft (Rd 3 or 4, Jones or Hecht), regardless of whether they get a G in the first two rounds or not.
English

@TheKyleDe @Herb2Slay Seems like they would’ve won 1 or 2 more games if the guard’s average grade was in the mid or upper 60’s.
English

@BitcoinRiot66 Nah, no reason to call you a bitter fan, that’s the reality of what you dealt with.
It could blow up in our face. But as the article said - it’s on-brand for McDaniel. If he get an upgrade at guard, it’s a luxury. Can’t pound the table for Mike and the. Be pissed when he’d Mike.
English

@TheKyleDe I hear you, but as a Dolphin fan, I'm telling you that he fixed literally none of his recurring issues the entire time he was here. I expect to see the exact same things from him in LA, albeit with a real QB this time. Call me a bitter fan if it helps, just telling you what I saw
English

@BitcoinRiot66 It’s not cope, it’s the facts.
It doesn’t guarantee success - but fans were thrilled over hiring McDaniel, not because of a projection of what he could be, but based on what he’s been as an offensive coach.
So we shouldn’t be pissed over him doing what he’s historically done
English

@TheKyleDe This is pure cope, lol. Wait until you find out that this is just one of McDaniel's fatal flaws, all stemming from his ego which produces a complete inability to learn from mistakes, such as thinking you don't need above average interior line play to succeed against playoff teams
English

@TheKyleDe @FL_ChargerFan How many playoff wins did that amount to?
English

@Nadsgonnadie Thank you Nads. I really appreciate it!
Absolutely - Hortiz strength is definitely drafting and I’d love for him to have more draft swings.
English

@TheKyleDe Fantastic article, Kyle, wish there was a way to have every Chargers fan read this before the inevitable meltdown that’ll come on draft night when the Chargers don’t take a Guard in the 1st round. Really warming up to the idea of a trade down and drafting a WR of Mike’s choice
English

@TheKyleDe Just read the whole article— great work, thanks for the deep dive 🙏
English

In the article I just wrote - it’s basically about how the G’s are good enough for Hortiz to go BPA the first two rounds… but if none of those picks are guards, I’d still focus on drafting L Jones or S Hecht over trying to upgrade G in the third.
I think C is the big make-or-break (other than losing two tackles), so having a competent backup center should be a priority.
