In 2023, I was stranded in Oshodi while coming back from an interview. No cash, no money in the account. Phone at 4%. Rain was beating me black and blue with no hideout. I posted: “Please, is anybody around Oshodi? My phone is about to go off and I’m stuck at Arena Junction. I need 2k for transport to get back home. I’ll pay back tomorrow. No jokes please.” I tagged three of my closest friends, people that called me “sister” on birthdays. First reply was laughing emojis. “LMAO, you don finally cast.” Second reply: “Omo, trek am, exercise.” Third person saw it and posted a meme two minutes later. My phone died. I sat on a bench laid across the walkway, soaked, watching Lagos run past me, thinking this is how it ends for two thousand naira. After a few minutes, a car parked close to where I was. The car windows rolled down and a voice asked, “Are you Ireoluwa?” I nodded. “One guy say make I carry you go Abule Egba. E don pay.” I got in without thinking twice. Halfway, my phone buzzed on the driver’s power bank. A DM from a stranger I never followed: “Hey there, I saw your post. I really don’t know you but I know that feeling. Bolt is paid to your street. Get home safe. No need to pay back. Just help someone else one day when you can.” I got home and checked his page. He’d been job hunting for three months and was probably broke. But he sent me a ride and some money. Now we are good friends even though we have still never met. My friends with jobs posted me for cruise. A stranger with nothing posted me for life. That night I learned friendship doesn’t define family. Sometimes your lifeline is the person you’ve never met.

You have to be admitted to two schools concurrently. The new cut off is 150 and 300 will admit you in two schools and you will still have balance of 72, which you can distribute among friends or use the 72 to fight for the third admission in a polytechnic. My first job in the UK 🇬🇧 was pot washing in a fancy hotel kitchen 😭🇬🇧 On one of my first shifts, I decided to impress everybody with my “hardworking Naija spirit” 😂 The pile of pots and plates they expected to last 5 hours of the shift, Omo I finished everything in 3 hours 😇😆 I was SO proud of myself. In my mind I was like: “Now I can relax small… maybe drink water peacefully and observe life” 😌 So I leaned on the dishwasher machine for literally a few minutes watching the chefs cook. Little did I know… All the sous chefs were acting supervisors and monitoring spirits 😭 “Chi is finished pot washing.” I didn't even see the senior chef 🧑‍🍳 coming. One minute I was watching a man sauté something, the next minute there was a presence beside me.😪 "Right then. Since you're done —" What followed next, I cannot fully explain with words, but I will try.😪 I changed tissue rolls in every tissue lock on the wall. I replaced the liquid soaps hanging over all the sinks around the kitchen, I swept a kitchen that was already clean. I emptied bins that were barely full. I dragged bin trolleys OUTSIDE and cleaned them— with my two hands. I brought out every single cup and plate that I had just washed, dried them AGAIN, and aligned them in the boxes so very carefully 🤣 The man found me work for the remaining two hours. Every. Single. Minute. Accounted for.⏱️ I stood there arranging cups 🫖I had already arranged, and that's when the education hit me This is not Naija 🇳🇬. Nobody here cares that you finished early. If they are paying you for 6 hours, you will WORK for 6 hours.😩 There is no "I've finished, let me rest small." There is no leaning on the machine with your arms folded. There is no watching the chefs cook like you're a food critic.😩 If you finish your task find another one. Clean something. Organise something. Count the spoons and fork if you have to. JUST LOOK busy. Because the moment they catch you idle, they will not give you rest they will give you purpose. And their version of purpose at 2pm on a Tuesday is scrubbing a bin trolley in the cold outside. That day I learned one of the most important lessons of working in the UK:🇬🇧 Your hours belong to them. All of them. Even the quiet ones. I never leaned on that machine again. 😅 To every immigrant reading this — especially if you just started working here . Or you intend to work here, this is not about being lazy or not. It's just a different work culture. The sooner you understand it, the smoother your journey. No rest at work until you clock out.

Moments like that are the reason why AMVCA was formed We will not allow the award to be watered down just because one person refused to attend 😊
