The Star of David exists in both Jewish and Christian traditions because both religions emerged out of the shared world of Second Temple Judaism. The symbol has been associated at different times with the House of David, Solomon, divine protection, sacred geometry, and even broader biblical symbolism used by both Jews and Christians throughout history. The Catholic and Orthodox do the same thing in religious art and architicutre and have for centuries. Historically speaking this was more common in Eastern Orthodox churches than it has been in Protestant ones. Even in the earliest layers of the church they were using that symbol and associating it with Jesus too.
