Ich will wieder in Deutschland leben

@txgermanbre Well, they aren't autonomous, customers have to scan their groceries manually at a self checkout.
English

Germany though figured it out oddly

Jeff bezos couldnt even get autonomous grocery stores to work , I wanna be scared but these dudes really are failures at many things

Poland Diary, day 46.
I still haven't seen what this "Złoty" currency looks like. Digitalized payments are everywhere, everyone pays with their bank card, their phone or "Blik", a stark change from Germany where the population uses physical bank notes and coins.
I hope that one day I will get to see what złoty and grosz looks like.
English

@levelsio yeah, but in Switzerland this comes with the benefit that by law, its not illegal to download movies etc. for personal use because artists/companies get compensated by this "mini tax"
English

/r/mildlyinteresting
In Portugal you pay up to €7.50 when you buy a laptop called a "copyright levy"
You pay €4/TB of storage in the computer, so for a MacBook Neo 13" with 512GB that's €2.05
It's regulation made in 1998 to compensate artists for you illegally sharing MP3 files which nowadays of course doesn't make sense anymore since we have Spotify and YouTube
Much of the money doesn't even arrive with artists btw, 30% is taken by the organization collecting the tax and lot of it remains unclaimed and some of that goes again to the organization collecting the tax as "operational costs"

@TheNut @eastdakota This is not cheap at all. If your apartment was 1k EUR cheaper and every person who moves in has to spend 1k with that kind of service, you've wasted a bunch of money and have an inferior construction.
English

Fact the U.S. doesn’t allow direct drive elevators (where they’re powered by two motors connected to the cab, as opposed to a cable or hydraulic system) is completely stupid. They’re faster, as safe, take less space, and a lot cheaper. Allowed everywhere else in the world.
Alec Stapp@AlecStapp
There's no inherent reason why an elevator should cost 4x as much in the US as it does in France or Germany. This is a policy choice.

Handeln statt Abwarten!

@eastdakota Complaining that US elevators have larger cab is a bad take, though. Are building developers really complaining about additional 30 sq ft? In Europe the cabs are tiny and you can't move certain types of furniture. This is artificial poverty.
English

@Althaus_Sven @marioellerbrock @movexxl Da LKW an jeder CCS Säule (wie Autos) laden können: schon lange

@marioellerbrock @movexxl Gibt es in der Strecke mittlerweile genug Ladesäulen für LKW?

I was never able to do blood tests when I asked for it in Netherlands
Doctor asked "why? you're not sick?"
Then I tried in Portugal (at Germano de Sousa) but they never picked up the phone or when they did were so slow and unhelpful I gave up, they also require a doctor prescription btw
The first place I could get my blood tested was Thailand in 2018, I just walked into Bumrungrad and asked for it, amazing experience
Last few years we just fly to Brazil and do it here, the nurse comes to your home/hotel at 8am and takes your blood, same or next day results online
I find it funny I keep having to fly out of Western Europe to do blood tests, they make it impossibly hard to do them
Which is retarded
Nuno Guerra@nunowar
@levelsio Who is your doctor in Portugal who can prescribe all the tests you want to do?

Nearly 2 years since they closed my bank accounts for speaking out against Israeli war crimes at the United Nations.
Last month, with the help of some friends and lawyers, I managed to open a new account after two years of ongoing financial penalties.
Today, Sparkasse Bank closed my new bank account… This time, the financial penalties targeted me and my family! They closed also my wife’s bank account. They also informed me that I cannot open a new bank account now or in the future and even in all their partner banks.
All this for my voice! For saying stop violating international law and killing children! Even as an accredited representative at the United Nations Human Rights Council!

@Porkchop_EXP Meanwhile in reality: online registration in Frankfurt
frankfurt.de/service-und-ra…
English

Efficiency only possible in the Netherlands (sci-fi for Germany):
Registering a car on my name, apart from the fact that the sales guy can do it all online in one minute, at some point he did have to call the motor vehicle authority - someone immediately picks up and already can see which car he’s filing for online.
Issue resolved in 1 minute.
English

@DRSmercheant @Porkchop_EXP Same in Germany, takes only a few minutes. Even for new cars
English

@Porkchop_EXP We all can do it on de RDW website. ⬇️ rdw.nl/kopen-of-verko…
English

@Porkchop_EXP @DrainTheComex It works for the whole country, but not all municipalities use it. Here's the link for Frankfurt
frankfurt.de/service-und-ra…
English

@TheNut @DrainTheComex This might be a local government thing, but for Frankfurt the current archaic system is indefensible
English

Small things make life in the Netherlands so much less stressful than elsewhere: municipality bureaucrats replying to your “please hurry up” email within an hour, or healthcare admin people calling you twice if you miss their call (as opposed to not being able to reach them by phone at all in Germany), being patient instead of barking at you.
All of this adds up immensely day after day.
Dutch people love to complain about everything, but they don’t know how good they have it.
English

@TheNut @DrainTheComex There is even a myriad of companies taking advantage of desperate people - offering pre-booked appointments via them at cost. 3rd world.
English

@Porkchop_EXP @DrainTheComex It's called ikfz and works well. My little brother did this last may. Went to the dealer, paid, got the registration, purchased insurance from HUK24 online, registered it at the city of Dresden and went off. Paperwork was sent via letter few days later.
English

@TheNut @DrainTheComex NOT TRUE
I had to go to Zulassungstelle in person every time for everything and they don’t even have appointments (the only thing you can arrange online) for weeks
English

@Porkchop_EXP @DrainTheComex All online in Germany, takes ~15 min (but requires a German ID), car can be driven immediately
English

What is it that they “know” as compared to Dutch admin? It’s admin and bureaucracy, and in NL it’s simplified to the max.
Do I need to wait for 3-4 weeks for an appointment to register a car in my name in NL? Do I need to drag myself physically to the FAHRZEUGZULASSUNGSTELLE and wait in line simply to register a car I bought? 😭😭😭
