I keep saying it, but if you're in the northern hemisphere now and you are not looking for these amazing mushrooms in your garden, you're missing out. Mushrooms are the fruiting bodies of the underground mycelium web. The fall is when they pop up to reproduce because the cool, wet conditions are optimal. This is a pic from the garden today. I just love this image of the gills on the underside of this beauty. The gills are where mushrooms have blade-like structure that produce the spores for reproduction. By folding the gills, mushrooms can increase the surface area by 20x compared to a flat surface. Each spore is fired off the gill by a micro-drop of fluid called a Buller’s drop — a perfectly timed physics trick where surface tension catapults the spore into the air. The spacing and angle of gills aren’t random; they create tiny air currents that help the mushroom ventilate and disperse spores even in still air. Some species literally design their own airflow.
