Ironically, the name Dardan is attested among 19th-century Christian Macedonian Slavs, making the usage far older in form than its modern revival in Albanian nationalist discourse, where the name has been reintroduced as a symbolic reference to ancient Dardania under romanticized Illyrian continuity narratives. In the “Bulgarian Folk Songs” (1867) collection of folk songs and traditions from the Ottoman Empire, mostly gathered in the Macedonian region by the Miladinov brothers, there is a list of common personal names in which the masculine name Dardan appears once, and the feminine form Dardana appears twice. One possible interpretation is that the name preserves an older Balkan onomastic element among South Slavic-speaking populations, later reinterpreted through Slavic naming patterns. In this reading, Dardan could be understood as a secondary Slavic formation from dar (“gift”) + -dan (“given”), meaning something like “gifted” or “given as a blessing,” comparable to names such as Bogdan and Vojdan. The root dar- is common in Slavic names, appearing in forms like Darko, Dara, Darinka, and others. Given the context of the Miladinov material, largely local, oral, and reflective of pre-standardized village naming practices, a native Slavic derivation is methodologically more cautious and arguably more probable than projecting modern nationalist or ethnogenetic interpretations back into 19th-century anthroponymy. Projecting direct continuity with the ancient Dardani would require stronger supporting evidence. This begs the question - Are Albanians unknowingly using a Slavic name?
