End BEE and other costly regulations. 5. Slash taxes! South Africa is one of the countries with a very high tax burden in emerging markets. 6. Amy Biehl was a bright, compassionate 26-year-old American who went to South Africa in 1993 to help fight apartheid and support democracy. While driving through a township near Cape Town, she was pulled from her car by a mob chanting “Kill the settler!” and “One settler, one bullet.” She was stoned, beaten, and stabbed to death in a frenzied racial attack simply because she was White.

Some just hit harder than others. Annette Kennealy, a 51-year-old artist, animal lover, and outspoken human rights activist from the Louis Trichardt area, was brutally murdered on her smallholding, Welgevonden. On 20 May 2019, friends went to check on her after she didn't respond to calls or messages. They found her in her farmhouse, beaten to death with severe head injuries from a hammer and an iron bar or pipe. She had been living there as a single mom who cared deeply for animals and spoke out strongly against farm attacks. This wasn't a robbery gone wrong; the violence was targeted and horrific. Her employee was later arrested in connection with the case. Annette had served as a local DA councillor and used her voice to highlight the dangers our farming communities face. Losing someone who fought so hard for awareness makes this loss even heavier for all of us.

Durban police identified the body of a woman dumped in a sports field in Inanda as Jessica Merle Leanne Weyers, 23. She was last seen on November 1, 2020 when she told family she was visiting a friend but never returned. Her body was discovered by community members with her throat slit and both hands chopped off. Police believe she was murdered elsewhere and dumped at the Newtown A sports ground. Her mother, Leanne Claassens, described her as a loving, caring person and expressed devastation, noting she had recently lost a son as well.

In the early hours of 17 September 2020, Charne Manuel from George, Western Cape, was found next to a railway line. She had been raped, robbed, choked, tied up (hands and feet), and murdered. Her underwear and pants were pulled down. Ruwaden Bruiners and Johnick Kleinbooi were seen with her the previous evening after a police roadblock stop. The case involved a brutal sexual assault and killing in a public area near the tracks. The men walked with her along the railway lines. They decided to rob her. Bruiners placed his arm around her neck and choked her until she lost consciousness. She was made to lie down alongside the train tracks. The men searched her belongings. Kleinbooi tied her hands and feet. She briefly regained consciousness, after which Kleinbooi choked her again. The men then raped her (they used a plastic bread cover as a makeshift condom in an attempt to avoid leaving DNA evidence). To silence her and prevent her from calling for help or identifying them later, they suffocated/smothered her. A rolled-up sock was forced into her mouth, filling the entire oral cavity and oro-pharynx. A second sock was tucked under her front bottom teeth. A rope was tied through her mouth, over her cheeks, and around the upper neck with a knot at the back. These horrific sexual violence and murder cases against White South Africans, often involving extreme brutality, continue to reflect the country's severe crime crisis and the vulnerability of women to such attacks.

Today we mourn those who died during an ANC terror attack that took place in Church Street, Pretoria, exactly 43 years ago on 20 May 1983. The bombing resulted in the deaths of 19 people, both black and white.
