THE UNTOLD STORY! I saw that trending video of the girl on the bicycle and suddenly Kabale came rushing back. Bicycles used to be a thing in Kabale. An amazing thing. And it surprises me they’ve never turned it into a worldwide cycling marathon spot, because Kabale deserves that kind of spotlight. I grew up in the middle of town, and Kabale was a beautiful small town that held every kind of fun a child could want. We were raised by a community. Once in a while, we’d have bicycle races. Kabale is hilly but people would still race. You’d hear noise fill the town. People cheering riders as they pushed toward the stadium, gifts waiting at the finish line. It was the biggest spotlight in town. Nothing else mattered that day. And there was a famous spot where this man sold the sweetest samosas, Shumbusha zowakarekyera People traveled from anywhere to buy them. Every Mukiga in Kampala used to send for those samosas back home. There was no way you’d visit Kabale, visit your hometown, without stopping by to buy that samosa. It was that good. Kabale is known for being cold. Back then it was even colder. The weather has always been unique. Amazing. We’d walk to school early morning, shivering, fog so thick you couldn’t see your neighbor. You’d meet a bicycle and it would nearly knock you because nobody could see anyone. That’s how thick the fog was. We’d get to school and even at break time it was still cold. You’d hold a cup of porridge just to warm your hands. In class, it was so hard to write. Your hands were freezing, couldn’t even hold a pen. But the most amazing thing people don’t know about Bakiga is that they are generous and genuinely good people. Genuinely good. They love wholeheartedly. They’re mistaken for rude because they speak up. But when you get to see a romantic Mukiga, he or she is really romantic. With genuine love. They will love you and make you forget. They will take care of you. They will do anything for you. That is their love. If there was one word to describe Bakiga it would be love. They really love deeply. They support. They show up. And Bakiga speak the truth. They are really honest. They believe the truth will always set you free. They tell the truth so you get on clear terms. No games. No lies. Just straight, even when it’s hard. Lake Bunyonyi was every rich family’s hangout spot during Christmas and the famous sculpture at overland was every family’s dream to take a picture on it. (Picture below) Kabale is beautiful. Unique. Anyone who grew up there will tell you it’s an amazing place to be. The people are so good,Imagine your friend packing sweet potatoes for school and sharing with you. Parents bringing sweet potatoes and passing them around. It was just that beautiful. And the smiles ,when you see a smile from a Mukiga, it’s different from any other. It’s the most hospitable smile, the one Baganda call “Nsanyuuse okulaaba” but deeper. It welcomes you home.
