There is no 'modern model' of universities based on commercialisation and applied skills training. Either universities argue that fundamental research is worth subsidising for intrinsic and indirect benefits, or they are effectively arguing that universities are not needed.

@Rrrrnessa Can I suggest that the traits you describe are particular to middle class Brits. As a working class Brit in a middle class profession I've struggled with the passive (aggressiveness) and inauthenticity and I'm sure I've been disliked for my directness and friendliness too.

I’ve been in the UK for a while now and honestly, I am still adjusting and learning. In many ways, the things I was lauded for in the USA: my directness, my friendliness, my commitment, and even just being a passionate person are things I am disliked for & punished for here.
