I recently had a convo with a friend abt this as well, and it just comes down to what you’re comfortable with doing. Just because something was done already, dosent means you can’t have your own take on it. ESPECIALLY if you didn’t even know it had been done before 😮💨

@toasterligament I also second this. Although the abundance of this archetype is harmful imo, that doesn’t mean every single plus sized black character is inherently bad for the community.

@TheRealRLGuy I half-agree with this take because I do genuinely believe there are a lot of artists and writers who make black plus-sized characters with good intent... But that doesn't mean there isn't a pattern of someone doing it out of ignorance/hate

@cyclonetortilla And since they don’t take the time to view diversity in its many shapes and forms, it could lead to internalized and stereotypical concepts of what they think that character should be, surface instead. Which ironically traps their view of diversity itself into a small box. 2/2

@cyclonetortilla I think that may be the case most of the time unfortunately. Some of them may view diversity itself as a checklist to meet a certain level of either ally ship, or virtue signaling. instead of doing a genuine assessment and inclusion of diversity. 1/2

I think the fact that some people were trying their hardest to create the idea that Jax wasn’t a closeted trans person despite there being so much evidence saying otherwise ( including Goose herself ) Says a lot about how sociological factors can play into media literacy
