Unfortunately, @JDVance does not follow me any more but if he or @elonmusk is serious about a wager on this I'd be happy to put a decent amount of money (not "every dollar that I own") against Democrats doing court packing.

@TheRedNed11482 @bonchieredstate I know you think you're saying something, im sure in your mind those are profound numbers and a real sacrifice. 1500 out of 500000000 is no one. They aborted that many while you were writing your comeback.

I refuse to believe you guys don't see the problem here. It's one thing for the Europeans not to provide direct support for the operation. It's another for France to deny the use of its airspace for cargo deliveries or for the UK to muddle over domestic base usage. There is no point in being in an alliance that can't provide such basic guarantees of cooperation.

@AstorAaron @JewishWarrior13 It also is giving up on Pax Americana. MAGA is dead.

what’s the best, grand unified theory on why Republicans seem totally OK with losing the House and possibly the Senate in the 2026 midterms, getting their POTUS impeached, and probably losing the next presidential election in 2028?

@neoavatara 3. Europe’s response to this conflict is the beginning of the end of the NATO, a decision future European governments will deeply regret. 4. If a NATO country is attacked, the US can simply claim that they don’t see evidence that it was attacked. Article 5 will be worthless.

Meloni, who is a huge Trump fan, even denied access. You can look at this two ways: 1. Meloni and Europe are useless and don't have America's back. 2. Trump, by cutting Europe out of the discussions about the war, largely has diminished the reputation of the US, and Europe isn't going to blindly go along.

This just flat out isn't true. Blue states had substantially more draconian lockdowns than most of Europe. Europe also had *much* better vaccine policy while, here in the US, the Biden admin told YouTube to censor videos of US scientists saying that we should follow European recommendations
Jason Furman@jasonfurman

I agree with these. But am curious how it compares to Europe. They had much, much more draconian lockdowns. But did they not have the same vacillation and hypocrisy that we had? Is the backlash more or less there than here? Pointers to writing on this most welcome.

Popes must demonstrate fidelity to observable reality before I will listen. It is an absurdity for a person, whose only claim to authority is his obedience to superstitious dogma, to lecture us about the wisdom of military intervention. He is a guy convinced of fanciful beliefs such the Transubstantiation in the Eucharist, The Immaculate Conception and saintly miracles. Why should I trust the opinion of someone, who goes to work every day to play make believe, on the wisdom of a military attack upon a tyrannical theocratic dictatorship? Is the basis for his belief on this subject as imaginary as his others?

@avidseries @mehdirhasan That has nothing to do with the pope. But also remember that just before all that happened, the Romans and Persians had fought an enormous war over the exact same area for several years. Wars happened a lot back then—not an Arab or Muslim trait by any stretch of the imagination

@politicalmath Third, the ‘it was over in July 2020’thing was true everywhere, and people talked about it at the time. The summer significantly reduced cases so restrictions went down everywhere. Then they came back IN EUROPE but not the USA

My statement re Prohibiting the Latin Patriarch of entering Church of Holy Sepulcher on Palm Sunday: While all Holy sites in the Old City are closed due to safety concerns for mass gatherings including the Western Wall, Church of the Holy Sepulcher and Al Aqsa Mosque, the action today by the Israel Nat'l Police to deny Latin Patriarch Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa and 3 other priests from entering the Church to offer a blessing on Palm Sunday is an unfortunate overreach already having major repercussions around the world.  Home Front Command Guidelines restrict any gatherings to 50 people or less.  The 4 representatives of the Catholic Church were well below that restriction.  Statements from the Gov't of Israel indicate the action to prohibit Cardinal Pizzaballa entry to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher were for safety reasons, but churches, synagogues, and mosques throughout Jerusalem have met with the restrictions of 50 or less.  For the Patriarch to be barred from entry to the Church on Palm Sunday for a private ceremony is difficult to understand or justify. Israel has indicated it will work with the Patriarch to accommodate a safe means of carrying out Holy Week activities.

I've had the rule about blocking people who erect strawmen for years, but I've never vigorously enforced it. Starting today, that changes. I normally get a few hundred replies to my tweets/replies each day. A sizable percentage of them will be strawmen. Wading through all the strawmen is an unpleasant experience, and, unfortunately, I tend to waste my time by responding and warning them not to do it. Most people who erect strawmen are either chronic hotheads reacting emotionally to a tweet or are simply not sufficiently intellectually-equipped to understand what a logical fallacy is. It just occurred to me that neither of these types of people are accounts that I want in my replies anyway. So why even bother to warn them? So from now on, no warning: You erect a strawman, you get blocked.
