When people say western (in this case, British) action isn't as good as Hong Kong or Japanese action, I show them The Duellists.

"My first film, 'The Duellists' (1977) was criticized for being too beautiful. One critic complained about ‘the overuse of filters.’ Actually, there were no filters used. The ‘filters’ were fifty-nine days of pissing rain." --- Ridley Scott Full Excerpt: "Because of my background in fine art, I have very specific ideas about making films. I’ve always been told I have this eye. I’ve never thought about what it is, but I’m usually accused of being too pretty, or too beautiful, or too this, or too that. I’ve gradually realized that this is an advantage. My first film, 'The Duellists' (1977) was criticized for being too beautiful. One critic complained about ‘the overuse of filters.’ Actually, there were no filters used. The ‘filters’ were fifty-nine days of pissing rain. I think what he was taken by was how I look at the French landscape. Probably the best photographers of the Napoleonic period would be painters. So I looked at the Russian painters of Napoleon going to the front on that disastrous journey to Russia. A lot of great nineteenth-century views on that are frankly just photographic. I would take everything from those and apply that to the film." ("The Element: How Finding your Passion Changes Everything", Ken Robinson with Lou Aronica, 2009)

This fight laid the foundations for Donnie's "uncooperative" style. Jackie did a version of this with Mars in Dragon Lord. When Salvitti helped mix this with MMA it changed the world. Donnie smartly kept the shapes too. In Flashpoint it was "sprawl". Action needs shapes!

Was watching some SPL (2005) behind the scenes commentary with Donnie Yen and man, this shit is gospel, I am with it 100%🙏

Hey Braden, if you want it bad enough you can make it happen but no one is going to give it you, you must take it! I’d argue that the weight isn’t the issue, gives you personality if anything, look at Sammo. He had an unusual look that made him stand out, was incredible at martial arts, extremely funny and kicked like a damn Mule! Also happened to be one the greatest ever martial arts action directors and can act. Find out what makes you stick out from the crowd and lean in to it and be the best you can be. Good luck!

One of my favorite fights from ACCIDENT MAN!! It’s always a blast when Scott gets to be mean even as a hero and Tim Man makes him look absolutely untouchable here. These two make magic happen and I cannot wait to see what they cook up next!
