𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘇 𝗠𝗮𝗵𝗺𝗼𝗱 at a memorial event marking the 20th anniversary of the death of Banaz Mahmod, held in partnership with her sister, @payzeespeaks , following an invitation from the 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐲 𝐌𝐚𝐲𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞)

It was a privilege to speak at the Honour-based Abuse Conference this week and hear powerful stories from victims, survivors and the agencies that support them. Tackling VAWG is my top priority and I know we must do more to end these horrific crimes.

So grateful to have @payzeespeaks as our new ambassador for the Sky Project. She has transformed unimaginable loss into tireless campaigning, challenging ‘honour’-based abuse/ forced marriage and demanding change.

20 years without you Banaz. I remember this day in 2006 like it was yesterday. I retrace my steps, so many what ifs. Your memory lives on for eternity. I just want the world to see your beautiful smile, know your kind heart & bravery. You’re in my heart & mind always ❤️

Happy 40th birthday in heaven, my beautiful sister Banaz❤️ We should have been celebrating you…your beautiful life, your laughter, the woman you were becoming. You should still be here. You should be turning 40. You were meant to grow older, to live, to be surrounded by love.

Forty is such a milestone, a chapter of wisdom and becoming. We should have been celebrating exactly how you would’ve wanted it. Nothing loud or extravagant. Just Kurdish or Persian food on the table, endless cups of tea, warmth, and your gentle laughter.

The Home Office has said it will pilot a prevalence study looking at how widespread forced marriage is, as part of a raft of measures, external to crack down on honour-based abuse. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

We have worked way too hard to use language like this @FMUnit Language shapes public understanding and policy conversation. Why am I surprised though? An article and campaign ‘dedicated’ to Banaz but can’t even get the basics right about her or what happened. Shame

The 16 Days of Activism is a global call to end violence against women. Forced Marriage and ‘Honour’ Based Abuse are preventable. Education and training save lives. The Sky Project deliver training locally + nationally and will be sharing key points throughout the month.

Minister Jess Phillips Visits Karma Nirvana and Announces 6 New Measures to Tackle Honour Based Abuse in the UK 🕊️ We welcomed the Minister for Safeguarding Jess Phillips MP @ukhomeoffice to our offices in Leeds to highlight our life-saving work and what is needed to tackle HBA going forward. This visit accompanies the announcement of 6 new measures the government is planning to tackle HBA in the UK, including the announcement of an intention to introduce a statutory definition for HBA. During the visit, Minister Phillips met with our helpline team, members of the Karma Nirvana Survivor Ambassador Panel, as well as Yasmin Javed and Sawaria Sajid. The Minister heard firsthand accounts of the challenges faced by survivors and victims of Honour Based Abuse, listened to a call during the visit, and was also able to discuss cases with our helpline team. This milestone is also a huge relief and a moment of recognition for all those who have campaigned tirelessly for change. We are deeply grateful to our supporters throughout this journey, especially Yasmin, whose courage and advocacy following the launch of 'The Push: Murder on the Cliff' documentary has been instrumental.
