Personalizing your website doesn’t have the marketing lift that one may think. Sure, you shouldn’t show someone dog food if they don’t have a dog. But going too extreme and personalizing every element on your webpage may not have as big an impact as you may think. Just look at the chart below. 28 companies that leverage personalization shared their data. They tracked the number of elements on a page they personalized to see what impact it would have on conversions. They tested multiple elements, from past purchase history to IP address to even their name. As you can see, there were slight lifts, but not as much as most marketers claim. Remember that some of the lifts were so small that it would be hard to get statistically significant results when running an A/B test. Plus there could have been other external variables that caused the conversions to go up.
