@tpsojda And that’s exactly the reason why he SHOULDN’T do it. A PHX NHL franchise needs an engaged, passionate owner who instills a winning culture from the top down à la what Vegas and Utah has. This market had decades of sleepy, passive, careless owners and what did it lead to??

@61_Shasta This is correct! After he couldn’t get the arena land in the summer of 2024 he threw the keys back on the counter to the NHL and surrendered this agreement. Anyone can now bid to bring the franchise back. It’s going to be an uphill battle, IMO

Yet another reminder: Utah entered the #NHL as an expansion. In lieu of expansion draft, Utah purchased the hockey ops of the PHX franchise because the other 30 owners agreed that PHX could no longer continue operating at this time. The PHX franchise still exists, just suspended

@The_Anthony_P @CoyotesAvs12 One major difference is Smith received $900m and a 99 year lease on downtown SLC land. Any renovations to the Suns arena would have to be 100% self funded.

According to this article if Ishbia were to bring the NHL back it looks like it wouldn't happen until he needs a new arena and his current lease lasts 10 more seasons. Hopefully there's a viable path that could happen sooner but I'm doubtful because another arena in or around downtown that would compete with Mortgage Matchup Center for events would have a very hard time.

@CoyotesAvs12 @YotesVsEveryone Understood. I'm curious to know if the bones are good on that building. I think the Delta Center is a year older, it underwent a major renovation in 2017, undergoing more renovations now and it seems like there's no plan to replace it

@YotesVsEveryone @CoyotesAvs12 I don't underderstand why this HAS to be a new arena. Ishbia could come out tomorrow & say "I'm renovating this bldg for hockey & putting together a exec team to petition 4 NHL expansion." If done, IMHO we'd have something in 3-5yrs. He's just not interested

@CoyotesAvs12 There are term to break the lease early. I believe Suns would owe $17.5m for each year they would early but the lease is an obstacle for any NHL arena that’s in PHX (outside of a county island like the Dbacks). PHX can’t give any money to another arena during the lease I believe.
