TCP/IP was written in 1974. It did not “evolve” into something else.
You can run 1974 TCP/IP today and connect. I do not recommend it. It is ugly, fragile, and full of problems. But it still speaks the same protocol.
What you missed is that the internet did not really win until around 2004. That is 30 years.
In the meantime, IPX and others looked unstoppable. They were the global dominant forces of their day. Now they are museum exhibits.

Not because it's perfect. Because network effects don't care about perfect. It builds on top of it. That's exactly what's happening.
