That will by no means make you able to handle large and giant entities, and maybe not even human sized ones without a fight. And there are other ways to drive off creatures as well; Lights (bright, dark, particular frequencies, strobing, etc). Sounds (sharp, dull, continuous, close or distance ranges, etc). Smell (i.e. releasing something rotten, toxic, acidic, etc). Energy (Electricity is a good measure here- in an aquatic setting probably not so much unless it can be directed, can also have 'force/pulse' to drive things away). Also your story sucks; Were going to set up a colony but we absolutely will not have any soldiers, or means to defend ourselves, or kill animal life to survive'. This is what people talk about when they mention millennial writing. This is probably why in the streams I watch I keep seeing underwater ruins- because no one could be bothered to set up a defensive perimeter or use a bloody spear.
