🚨 I was almost taken hostage in Cuba... I went to Cuba to document the humanitarian crisis and show life under 60+ years of communism and now amid the US blockade. Once I landed, they seized all my cameras except my iPhone and had intelligence agents following me all day until my security noticed their spies tailing us to the hotel where they waited all night for us to come down. Under communism there is no free speech, and those who show the reality or speak up are imprisoned. Me going without a planned Cuban government guide nearly got me and my security taken hostage or imprisoned. The situation in Cuba is much worse than anyone knows.

While I was still active duty, I really enjoyed reading about the tactics used in the Rhodesian War, but was also frustrated at how maladapted the tactics used in GWOT were forced upon us. Rather than being adaptive to the unique missions at outstations, we were often given no option but to lumber along in giant armored vehicles, broadcasting our arrival, and giving fighters the time to set up prior to engagement. Would have been nice to let teams dictate their own tactics

Rhodesian troops in the Bush War used a kind of reconaissance by fire known as "Drake shooting".
Instead of waiting for the enemy to reveal themselves, troops would proactively shoot into likely hiding spots: bases of trees, rocks, thickets or anthills.
The goal was to kill concealed insurgents without first needing a clear visual on them.
They didn't waste ammo. Riflemen fired "double taps" or controlled semi-auto shots up to 12 inches off the ground.
This targeted legs and feet or ricocheted debris upward into the enemy's face and body.
If the enemy flinched, moved, or returned fire, it instantly revealed their position for accurate follow-up shots.
This was a very effective counter-insurgent tactic for the terrain they were fighting in.
