By 1903 the Manchu had been ruling as Chinese emperors for 259 years, longer than US' life!

If fully Sinicized Jurchens are steppe nomads, then the early Presidents are wild and tattooed Scots and Saxons fresh from misty forests, half-Christianized.

There is no implication that the coffee table is expensive. A mother would react identically if her son was driving nails through anything in the house. And no. He’s not being a smart aleck. He is genuinely befuddled as to how his mother cannot comprehend his obviously malicious behavior. Which makes it extremely funny.

I'm not a fan of Piker but I don't really get what he's being investigated for. Reporting on this is very unclear and seems designed for readers who just want to see him "pwned" and don't really care what the specific charges are. Delivering vaguely defined "aid" to Cuba without the proper US Treasury Dept license...is that it? Or is it that the "aid" didn't exist and the trip was actually US activicts schmoozing with the Cuban regime...is that it?

Well extra punishment beyond vandalism of expensive furniture, which is especially delinquent even for Calvin. This just seems sad.

The women here are part of that world, painted outdoors with the loose brushwork and natural light that defined his style.
