#SummitForDemocracy, Lusaka, #Zambia Reinvigorating to hear H.E. @HHichilema speak so firmly about the democratic governance ideal. President Hichilema stressed that Zambia tried both single-party rule and constitutional democracy to only conclude "as a nation" that the latter is better for human dignity. This was not a speech for an *ideal in retreat*, but rather an affirmation that human dignity is indeed tied to a governance system that guarantees human rights and inclusive participation, holds leaders accountable, and delivers economic dividends; especially so that our societies can care for those in need and address inequalities. This system is critical to maintaining nations' stability, he maintained. President Hichilema argued that nurturing and sustaining this system requires both strong leaders AND strong institutions: leaders who will stand for inclusive democratic principles when the going gets tough and institutions which outlast and hold Presidents accountable and delivers for the people. He touted Zambia's recent abolition of both the death penalty and the offense of criminal defamation of the president and encouraged other democratic nations to follow suit. He similarly urged countries to organize free and fair elections as enshrined in their respective constitutions. "Our citizens must be free to participate; citizens need to feel that they made decisions about who leads them." At the end, "This is what our people want: democratic governance." This is also why coup contexts always require very nuanced analysis. Pro-democracy mvt doesn't always equal anti-coup resistance; at least not in every context. Both Guinea & Mali also have strong pro-democracy movements. "Coup contexts" explain how those mvmts respond to coups.
