We are a group of concerned Burundian citizens who raise awareness and denounce injustices in Burundi. We are iBurundi.

Ambassador William, you are one of the few politicians I genuinely respect because you appear to value open and substantive debate. As Abarundi, we should take pride in fostering a political culture where issues of national importance can be discussed critically and without intimidation. Let me therefore address the matter of the rotating chairperson position currently held by President Evariste. This development is, in part, the outcome of diplomatic engagement and regional processes. However, the public misunderstanding does not stem from ignorance of how the position works. Abarundi understand that the chairpersonship follows an annual geographical rotation. They know it is not a spontaneous appointment, nor a lifetime achievement award, but part of an established rotational framework within the region. The real concern lies in the political narrative surrounding it. Some of our compatriots and government officials are presenting this rotational responsibility as though it were an unprecedented diplomatic triumph or a newly created office secured through extraordinary maneuvering. That framing is where the tension arises. When political leadership is excessively glorified, it invites scrutiny. In any functioning society, politically conscious citizens will naturally question whether they are witnessing genuine progress or carefully packaged propaganda. How do we reconcile the celebratory rhetoric with the lived realities of Abarundi over the past five years? During this period, the economy has struggled. We have experienced recurring fuel shortages, limited access to basic commodities such as sugar, and persistent challenges with water and electricity supply. Political legitimacy is not sustained by titles abroad alone; it is reinforced by tangible improvements at home. It is therefore understandable that some citizens react skeptically when the leadership is described as “Inyenyeri imurikira Africa” (the star that shines over Africa), while many feel that this same “inyenyeri” is not sufficiently illuminating conditions within Burundi itself (“itariko imurika u Burundi”). Political credibility begins domestically before it is projected regionally. Was it the Eastern region’s turn to assume the rotating chairpersonship this year? Yes. Was President Evariste selected by his region in accordance with that rotation? Yes. But regional politics are rarely devoid of behind-the-scenes diplomacy, negotiations, and strategic considerations. Acknowledging this does not diminish the achievement; it simply situates it within political reality rather than political mythology. The chairpersonship carries both opportunities and risks—for Burundi as a nation and for President Evariste personally. It can elevate diplomatic visibility, but it also raises expectations. It can enhance regional influence, but it also invites greater scrutiny. Ultimately, the issue is not that Abarundi misunderstand the position. The issue is the attempt to transform a rotational responsibility into a symbol of extraordinary national transformation. A politically aware population will always distinguish between institutional procedure and historic breakthrough.

🇺🇸🇧🇮The United States and Burundi signed a nearly $156 million five-year global health Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) through the #AmericaFirst Global Health Strategy. This MOU represents a shared commitment to saving lives and protecting Burundians and Americans from infectious diseases, while also promoting an autonomous, self-reliant health system in Burundi. The United States and #Burundi have more than 20 years of experience working together to combat HIV/AIDS and malaria, and this MOU will continue to build safer and healthier communities.
