@willynyamitwe @Sagwakiyago @_AfricanUnion Sure, Burundi may gain some diplomatic influence by leading the @_AfricanUnion; but for Burundians that’s meaningless if the current Burundian administration is unable to solve the current domestic challenges. For more than 3 years now, people cannot get fuel. AReal Shame

Dear @Sagwakiyago, allow me to take this opportunity to thank you for the thoughtful comment. You are right that the @_AfricanUnion Chairpersonship follows regional rotation. However, it is not purely automatic, it requires regional consensus and endorsement by all Heads of State of the African Union. But allow me to do a quick and factual clarification: within the AU framework, Burundi is not in East Africa but in Central Africa. Burundi Chairship therefore reflects Central Africa’s turn. So yes, it is procedural, but it is also politically meaningful. Celebrating Burundi’s first time in this role is not “mythology”; it is standard diplomatic practice. Such positions increase visibility, strengthen influence, and create opportunities for engagement. Domestic challenges are real, but they do not negate a country’s ability to assume international responsibilities. By the way, the last time we met in person was at least 6 or 7 years ago, or even more. I would be delighted to see you again and have a conversation face to face.
Média R@Sagwakiyago

Ambassador William, you are one of the few politicians I genuinely respect because you appear to value open and substantive debate. As Abarundi, we should take pride in fostering a political culture where issues of national importance can be discussed critically and without intimidation. Let me therefore address the matter of the rotating chairperson position currently held by President Evariste. This development is, in part, the outcome of diplomatic engagement and regional processes. However, the public misunderstanding does not stem from ignorance of how the position works. Abarundi understand that the chairpersonship follows an annual geographical rotation. They know it is not a spontaneous appointment, nor a lifetime achievement award, but part of an established rotational framework within the region. The real concern lies in the political narrative surrounding it. Some of our compatriots and government officials are presenting this rotational responsibility as though it were an unprecedented diplomatic triumph or a newly created office secured through extraordinary maneuvering. That framing is where the tension arises. When political leadership is excessively glorified, it invites scrutiny. In any functioning society, politically conscious citizens will naturally question whether they are witnessing genuine progress or carefully packaged propaganda. How do we reconcile the celebratory rhetoric with the lived realities of Abarundi over the past five years? During this period, the economy has struggled. We have experienced recurring fuel shortages, limited access to basic commodities such as sugar, and persistent challenges with water and electricity supply. Political legitimacy is not sustained by titles abroad alone; it is reinforced by tangible improvements at home. It is therefore understandable that some citizens react skeptically when the leadership is described as “Inyenyeri imurikira Africa” (the star that shines over Africa), while many feel that this same “inyenyeri” is not sufficiently illuminating conditions within Burundi itself (“itariko imurika u Burundi”). Political credibility begins domestically before it is projected regionally. Was it the Eastern region’s turn to assume the rotating chairpersonship this year? Yes.
Was President Evariste selected by his region in accordance with that rotation? Yes. But regional politics are rarely devoid of behind-the-scenes diplomacy, negotiations, and strategic considerations. Acknowledging this does not diminish the achievement; it simply situates it within political reality rather than political mythology. The chairpersonship carries both opportunities and risks—for Burundi as a nation and for President Evariste personally. It can elevate diplomatic visibility, but it also raises expectations. It can enhance regional influence, but it also invites greater scrutiny. Ultimately, the issue is not that Abarundi misunderstand the position. The issue is the attempt to transform a rotational responsibility into a symbol of extraordinary national transformation. A politically aware population will always distinguish between institutional procedure and historic breakthrough.

South Africa appreciates the report on the state of peace and security on our continent, and remains concerned about worsening conditions of conflict, war and instability on our continent. South Africa reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the vision of a peaceful, prosperous and integrated Africa as articulated in #Agenda2063. As we meet here, a number of African countries are currently under suspension from our Union due to Unconstitutional Changes of Government (UCGs), thus reverses democratic gains and development of our continent. The slow transition to constitutional order by the suspended countries is of concern. There must be demonstrable and comprehensive political engagement to assist any suspended country to navigate their respective transitions successfully and speedily; and to ensure they do not slide back into conflict. The situation in Sudan remains of concern to us all. We reiterate our call for all warring parties to lay down their arms immediately, allow unfettered humanitarian access and, most importantly, embark on an inclusive national political dialogue as the only way towards a sustainable resolution. With respect to the recent political and security developments in South Sudan, the situation is concerning. We call for a ceasefire in all affected states and urge all stakeholders to engage in an all-inclusive dialogue that will pave the way for free, inclusive and credible elections to end the long transition. South Africa, together with other C5 Members and members of IGAD is hosting a C5 Plus Summit here in Addis Ababa to consolidate South Sudan peace. There is a need for pragmatism and for an honest assessment of the minimum conditions required to conduct free, inclusive and credible elections, while acknowledging that certain processes may necessarily extend beyond the lifespan of the Revitalised Agreement for the South Africa is concerned about the prevailing security and humanitarian situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, despite several mediation and peace processes. We reiterate that the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the DRC must be upheld and respected. We condemn the continued capture of territories by the M23/AFC in the Kivu and Ituri provinces. Such unlawful actions must be corrected decisively. South Africa has assumed the role of the Regional Oversight Mechanism for the DRC and the Region, and during our tenure we will work with all signatory countries to the Framework to find a durable solution to this protracted conflict.
