@ThisAsterisk

I want to be stereotyped. I want to be classified.

@2niposting @shadowoftheali Apologies if none of this is comprehensive or makes any sense. I’m writing while at the gym

@2niposting @shadowoftheali Fair enough. Certain characters are easier to imprint upon than others. Characters such as Rorschach, Judge Dredd, Punisher, Batman etc. appeal to ideas of strict justice and black & white morality where right and wrong are easily defined.

@2niposting @shadowoftheali I reckon race and gender is a big reason as well. If a certain person sees a big white guy with a gun mowing down perceived bad guys, it can play into their power fantasies about justice.

@2niposting @shadowoftheali When a character is easily definable in the most basic ways, it allows less critical readers to attach their own beliefs to them and not have to think about it more than that. Everyone on the political structure does it but that’s why certain characters appeal to RW audiences imo

It comes across as vapid and pretentious and whatever value there is in the open ended nature of art is immediately ruined by the faux intellectual word salad interpretations offered up by its viewers.

There are plenty of valid responses to this tweet but something I’ve come to realize based on the responses is that there is more value placed on the IDEA that contemporary art is wholly subjective than there is in the interpretations of the art itself.

@BluebriarArts So what you’re saying is, modern art is cynical, performative, and doesn’t actually mean anything because it’s deliberately mocking art?

@ThisAsterisk @BluebriarArts If it’s “deliberately mocking art” it has a meaning. Cynical is meaning. Also what is art if not performative? Is like you understand the idea perfectly but still don’t want to acknowledge it.

@ThisAsterisk @illumirune @BluebriarArts It does, but art will always have a personal meaning to the viewer as well. This isn't death of the author, both the artist's intent and the viewer's interpretation exist.

@SnifflyFriend @BluebriarArts I said I prefer art with inherent meaning. That’s not the same as saying that I dislike art with subjective meaning.

@2niposting @shadowoftheali Are you asking what surface level characteristics the 4 characters mentioned could have that would be appealing to right wingers? Because I feel like if you were honest then it would be obvious

@ThisAsterisk @shadowoftheali but what is it about those surface level aesthetic elements which appeal to them? moreover, what deeper consistencies of superheroism are reflected in historically right wing movements?

@GuyNamedSleve @BluebriarArts I can see the appeal but I also find most people to be boring and their interaction with art is usually very unoriginal and trite

@ThisAsterisk @BluebriarArts Eye of the beholder my brother, both the artist and the viewer are afforded the same courtesy of interpretation of a work. Opening a work up for subjective analysis gives it a wider breadth of meaning, not a narrower one, You’re not an asshole, but give it a think.

@ThisAsterisk @BluebriarArts Inherent meaning of a piece of art will never exist. Meaning will always be something we give to the art, over and over. Art is recombinant
