Ministers celebrated and Nigerians were told the turning point had arrived with Dollar pressure reduced meaning Naira strengthened and above all local refining secured. That policy lasted exactly 21 months. Yesterday July 13, 2026, Dangote Refinery cancelled every naira-denominated invoice in its system and told every petroleum marketer in Nigeria to come back with dollars. All of them. Invalid. Petrol is now $0.779 per litre. Diesel is now $1.087 per litre. Aviation fuel is now $0.942 per litre. NNPCL was quietly supplying Dangote with more and more dollar-denominated crude while the refinery kept selling in naira. Nobody fixed the mismatch. Neither did anybody built a framework to protect the policy from exchange rate volatility. The market fixed it instead. Yesterday morning. In a commercial notice. Your fuel price is now permanently tied to the exchange rate. Every time the naira weakens, your pump price rises automatically. The very thing naira-for-crude was designed to prevent. 21 months, that is how long Nigeria’s biggest energy policy survived contact with reality. The same ministers who gave those press conferences in 2024 have been very quiet since yesterday morning.
