The City of Tshwane has unveiled 15 new municipal water tankers as part of its Water Stabilisation Plan and cost-cutting drive. From 1 April, the city will handle all water tankering in-house, ending reliance on private suppliers often linked to the violent “water mafia”. Executive Mayor Nasiphi Moya said the fleet will be fully city-operated, with strict controls including trackers, escorts for drivers, and on-site monitors to prevent theft or selling of water. The move is expected to save millions previously spent on tenders worth R300 million annually, while building internal capacity.
