The West Bank was not created by war in 1948. It was created by a secret deal. The Jordanian army (the Arab Legion) was commanded by British officer Sir John Glubb - “Glubb Pasha” - and more than forty other British officers. King Abdullah of Jordan reached a secret understanding with Zionist leaders: the Legion would avoid major clashes with Jewish forces in exchange for control of the West Bank and East Jerusalem. British Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin met with Jordanian Prime Minister Tawfiq Abu al-Huda, with Glubb Pasha acting as interpreter. Bevin told them explicitly: “Do not go and invade the Jewish part.” They brought maps showing exactly where the Arab Legion would stop. That line became the border of the West Bank. As one historian summarized it: “That is how the West Bank was actually created.” What was presented to the world as the 1948 Arab-Israeli War was, in significant part, a choreographed partition managed by British officers on both sides of the line. The borders that still define the Israeli-Palestinian conflict today were drawn in a secret meeting between Britain, Jordan, and the Zionist leadership — while the people who actually lived on the land had no seat at the table.

23rd of May war on South Lebanon update: Just at midnight Israeli bombed the outskirts of Hiram hospital in the center of Tyre, South of Litani. They used a 2 tons American made Mk 84 bomb to render the entire neighborhood devastated, and to disrupt medical services in one of the very few hospitals and medical centers that survived Israeli terror campaign until now. Yesterday they did the same in Tebnine hospital. This is a systematic destruction of medical facilities to enforce evacuation from the city and towns South of Litani. Where is the rest of the world to stop this?

While U.S. sanctions against two members of the Lebanese army were inevitable, given the ties between certain individuals in the institution and Hezbollah, and such steps will expand, if the ultimate aim is to precipitate a military solution to the matter of the party’s weapons, two likely outcomes come to mind: the state is unlikely to prevail, as it will find itself confronting a substantial portion of the Shiite community; and Lebanon will find itself in the midst of a regional battle between the U.S. and Israel on the one side and Iran on the other, with a host of Arab states and Turkey somewhere in the middle playing the balance, with dangerous consequences for Lebanon. The only way out of this impending mess is for the latter coalition of states to begin formulating a new regional security architecture that includes Iran, in which the question of Hezbollah can be discussed and ultimately resolved. These states have the latitude to bring the U.S. on board for such an effort, which could help neutralize the Israelis. Is success guaranteed?
