Here are some interesting facts about the fire in Maui that should make you ask questions. The governor, emergency management admin, fire chief, lieutenant governor, and attorney general were not on the island when the fire broke out. So the 2 most critical emergency officials were AWOL. The emergency alert system also wasn't activated and there are 400 sirens all over the state. The only system they activated was the cellphone alerts, but those comms were down too for some people, with many residents reporting they had zero warnings, some reporting that officials and police told them to stay and they'd be safe just a few hours before engulfing the area. Lastly, they didn't have enough firefighters and equipment. Apparently there were only 60+ firefighters across the 3 islands, and the administrators said they didn't address the fires until they were already at the populated areas and unstoppable.
