@QuetzalThoughts This assumes, rather poorly, that society's best interests are served better by imprisoning the guilty than by not having a system that can lock anyone up with impunity (which we are already pretty good at.) A defense attorney is infinitely better for society than a prosecutor.

Unironically yes. As a defense attorney you will be advocating against society's best interests as part of making an effort at a fairer system. It's necessary but shameful. They should care about the life of their client as professionals, but not at a personal level.
Alyssa Leader@alittleleader

“Sure I agree that it’s important that we have defense attorneys, but the people who do it should all be ashamed of their work and indifferent about the lives of their clients.”

@octonion You accuse Iran and Cuba of directly aiding Antifa so you can later charge people who are "Antifa members" with treason. Nothing is done without a reason.

@nick_field90 I don't really question your placement of the Batman movies, that I would rank them lower probably comes down more to snobbishness on my part than anything else. But I am curious about your take on The Prestige, which is my number 3 (behind Oppenheimer and The Odyssey unordered.)

For now, putting The Odyssey fourth in my Christopher Nolan ranking. The absolute top tier just behind Oppenheimer and ahead of Dark Knight Rises (which means a lot as I'm head of the TDKR Defenders Society). Enjoy the Nolan Re-Apex letterboxd.com/nickfield90/li…

@Noahpinion Western gay socialists will give up their lives for radical Islam, but will parade guillotines down the street in response to a right winger asking for lower taxes. I think that is consistent with the heat map lore?

"A Man...A Thought...A Trick" I rank this among Nolan's finest works. A melancholy plea for humanity to change. After all, nothing born in deceit can ever truly last letterboxd.com/nickfield90/fi…

@nick_field90 If he never makes another movie he will be known as the best filmmaker of this century. It will actually change my opinion of a person if they don't The Odyssey.

Best movie I have seen in a theater since before the pandemic. Yes, that movie. If you are whining because it lacked fidelity to language or casting or whatever other nonsense you complain about you are a fucking idiot.

There is something deeply evil about Hollywood rewriting the history or misrepresenting the culture of certain ethnic groups. They elevate the African but tear down or make a mockery of MENA's / Europeans The odyssey is just the latest, but this has been going on for decades

@jasonfried I'm sorry, maybe it is just the day I had. But I work with people every day who are not good at their job and not interested in being good at their job. Earning a paycheck is literally just doing what you have to do to live. There is zero nobility in it and nothing to be proud of

Every paycheck you get is evidence that you’re probably pretty good at your job. Every paycheck you get is evidence that you probably beat out some other good people to get that job. And continue to do so. Working for someone else is an excellent choice most of the time. Starting a business and working for yourself is a pretty bad idea most of the time. There’s no shame or missed opportunity in having a job.

I’d like to remind Abdul that aspirational goals aren’t real results. There’s only one candidate that’s delivered real legislation to lower health care costs for Michiganders, and that’s me. bridgemi.com/michigan-gover…

@nick_field90 Honestly the person who figures out how to get polling done well in this environment will (and should) get super rich. I will tell you who it isn't - the people doing synthetic polls

As polling has gotten more difficult to conduct over the past few years, I feel that political observers are attracting too much importance to focus groups. No matter how tightly you try to target key areas and demographics, there's only so much a dozen people can tell you

Gary Peters has been a workhorse in the senate for Michiganders. His endorsement of Haley Stevens shows that he sees that same work ethic in her. She’s not running for this seat to set herself up for a presidential bid like someone else.

@inspireprag I don't care how hard she works. I care if she is going to stand up for working people. I am not convinced she is. I think she is going to be another Democrat who, when faced with big issues goes "but we just can't have nice things."

This is the 2028 test run. If Abdul wins, it’ll show that people-powered, leftist energy, and AOC’s endorsement strength, can prevail in a swing state, setting her up well for a 2028 run. If Stevens wins, it’ll show AIPAC and the Dem establishment can successfully stunt that energy and install a corrupt candidate who is more likely to lose to a Republican on the general. The MI Dem Senate race is now the most important primary race of the year.

I understand the reasoning behind all of these changes, but dropping this on the chess community without any warning is bound to lead to some backlash.

♟ The FIDE Council has approved a series of significant changes to the format of the 2027 FIDE World Cup and the 2027 FIDE Women’s World Cup, following recommendations from the Global Strategy Commission. Beginning in 2027, both World Cups will be played over 19 days and will consist of two distinct stages. ▪️Stage 1: Swiss qualification The opening stage will consist of Swiss-system tournaments played with a Fast Classical time control of 45 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move. The FIDE World Cup will feature four Swiss pools, while the FIDE Women’s World Cup will be divided into two Swiss pools. Each Swiss tournament will be played over nine rounds across five days, with the pools balanced to ensure comparable playing strength. The leading players from each pool will advance to the knockout stage: – FIDE World Cup: Top four players from each of the four pools (16 players total) – FIDE Women’s World Cup: Top eight players from each of the two pools (16 players total) ▪️Stage 2: Knockout finals The second stage will retain the traditional knockout. The Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and final will be played using the existing World Cup format and classical time controls. Read more: fide.com/fide-council-a… #FIDEWorldCup
