On the campaign trail in Makerfield with my brilliant Reform UK team 💪 It's only a vote for Reform on June 18 that can get Labour out.

Surprise, surprise @wesstreeting is on @BBCr4today bashing landlords. I’ve got news for you mate, we can’t have a “productive nation” without people having homes, so if you want to tax Landlords to hell, I’d build some alternative accommodation first ‘cos you’re going to need it.

Britain regularly arrests people for speech crimes that are utterly alien to the United States - a polity from which so many Brits consume most of their media. Free speech is rising in salience as a political issue. This “are we going to get arrested for having English flags” question is a legitimate one - given the scale of speech arrests. Politicians need to wake up to the policies that are radicalising more of the public against them. While the way this man expressed his view was impolite, his fear for his country is grounded in truth.

Makerfield was Andy Burnham’s back up plan. For Robert Kenyon, it’s his home. This battle will be David Vs Goliath.

@alexwickham So he's offering nothing more than what Starmer is already doing. And his speech today was pretty dull. And he's already done a u-turn. Going well, Andy lad.

***EXCLUSIVE*** Andy Burnham fully rules out changing Rachel Reeves’ fiscal rules if he becomes PM At the weekend his team had left it open whether he might change them in future But tonight his spokesperson tells Bloomberg he is explicitly ruling out any changes to the existing fiscal rules AND crucially Burnham is now also ruling out exempting defence spending from the fiscal rules to spend more on the military He had floated that idea in a Bloomberg interview a few weeks ago but his spokesperson tonight says he won’t pursue it This is a big attempt by Burnham’s campaign team to reassure markets who were spooked on Friday by his potential premiership But it may risk disappointing some on the left who had hoped for a more radical fiscal policy It may also mean tax rises are the likely main revenue raiser in the event Burnham wants to increase spending

Working class communities don’t want to be told they got Brexit wrong. They were sending a message, and Labour still hasn’t properly heard it. They voted for change, and they’re still waiting for politicians to deliver it - for their towns, their industries, their way of life. That means secure work, pride in place, and control over their own communities. A Labour party worth its name stands with them, not above them. That is the test for any Labour leader.

@soniasodha Burnham won't win the party vote without addressing the single biggest and easiest lever we have to pull. So you'll be back to Starmer vs Streeting. So why bother removing Starmer at all?

Shambles? I'm pro UK ultimately rejoining, but the idea you can click your fingers and it's done - and that rejoining will undo the harm Brexit has already done to productive capacity of economy (it won't) - is for the birds. Feels unserious to pretend otherwise.
Alex Wickham@alexwickham

Pro-EU Labour figures very disappointed by this as they had thought Burnham was running to prove a Rejoin candidate could win in Makerfield and Brexit could be reversed. “Shambles,” says one

BREAKING Andy Burnham says he will 'respect' the result of the EU referendum. He says he is not proposing that Britain should rejoin the EU. It's a shift from his position at the weekend, when he said there was was a 'long-term case' for rejoining the EU. Burnham is trying to kill Brexit as an issue during the by-election 'I am not proposing that the UK considers rejoining the EU. I respect the decision that was made at the referendum. It's going to undermine everything I've said about strengthening democracy if we don't respect that vote. 'I sense a real yearning out there. People feel why aren't we where we should be? Why aren't things just working as they should? 'That's what I think has to be our focus now. Fixing the fundamentals of our own country rather than plunging into another divisive debate about a relationship with other countries'

“My view is that Brexit has been damaging, but the last thing we need right now is to re-run those arguments”, says Burnham. “I’m not saying that the U.K. reconsiders rejoining the EU”.

@RyanShorthouse This is a nice idea, but more cherry-picking. However, not to say it's not worth exploring. But I've no idea why the EU would accept it when they hold all the cards.

The UK should not seek to rejoin the EU. We will never get a better deal than we had before Brexit. But we should look to join the Single Market and lead an outer tier of European and other nations that want economic but not political union. In advance, it should seek to renegotiate the terms of membership, specifically freedom of movement and rule-taking, on the grounds that the world has changed and Europe needs to be a bigger economic force that represents the free world to counter the power of the US, China and India. thetimes.com/uk/politics/ar…

@Jonathan_Hinder If the polls say that people want to be closer to the EU, and the facts say that that is to the financial benefit of this country, why would you want to Hinder it?

@Steven_Swinford He's only interested in preserving his own job. If being in the EU makes more money for the UK and makes lives better for the people of the UK, then Hinder should be making the case.

Quite the intervention from Jonathan Hinder, the Labour MP for Pender and Clitheroe, on Wes Streeting and Andy Burnham calling for Britain to rejoin the EU 'We are just over a week after we took a real beating in our working-class heartlands 'It’s a very long list - we’re talking about the Hartlepools, the Grimsbys, Barnsley, places like Wigan, where this by-election is going to be, and we were losing to a party which until recently was called the Brexit Party 'And to suggest the solution now is for us to reopen that debate is just staggering, and the Labour Party is in an existential crisis, it really is, and the idea that we can reconnect to our working-class base by reopening this debate is just a staggering level of out of touch.'

Can the BBC finally sack Andrew Cartmell? It’s a shocker. Gone for a televote entry and received 0, a single jury vote. It’s time for him to go, and better yet, get rid of the WHOLE delegation.

I am also astonished to see @nadhimzahawi retweeting what Mr Orr posted. He, like me, served in the Cabinet of @BorisJohnson. He, like me, knows how critical Britain’s military and moral support has been to preventing a Russian conquest. He used to believe in these things.

Reform being so openly hostile to Britain’s support for Ukraine is one of the most off-putting things about them. Flying the flag of a free and sovereign Ukraine is a mark of our upholding their right to exist as a nation in the face of the murder, rape and pillage of Putin’s unprovoked invasion. Doing so does not detract from or diminish Britain’s national interest. It enhances it. We have a clear national interest in the defence of Europe, and not emboldening further Russian aggression.
James Orr@jtworr

If you were wondering why the Conservative Party just suffered its worst defeat in Essex - and why it will cease to exist there after the next general election - look no further. The Tories spent 14 years treating the national interest as one priority among many.
