Mixed race Burmese. Tweet mostly for #Myanmar #Burma #WhatsHappeningInMyanmar right now. #Rohingya is a political and militant movement. NOT an ethnic name.

#Rakhine On Thingyan eve. young women grind #Thanakha barks and roots to a fine cream by grinding it along with a sprinkle of water on rounded stone slabs. Once the Thanakha is ready. all go to nearby pagodas and wash the Buddha images with it as a new-year eve good deed.

@FortifyRights @Independent @matthewfsmith Judicial independence doesn’t need your guidance to deliver your preferred outcome. Don’t use “the people of Myanmar” as a rhetorical cover. You don’t speak for us. That’s not justice. It’s lobbying dressed up as principle.

“Peace is not a slogan. It is argued into being, measured carefully and made durable through judgement.” Writing for @Independent, @matthewfsmith, CEO at @FortifyRights, reflects from The Hague on the historic Rohingya genocide case at the International Court of Justice, and why the outcome matters not only for justice for the Rohingya and all people of Myanmar, but for the credibility of international law itself. independent.co.uk/voices/rohingy…

In short: You can’t convict a country of genocide using evidence that wouldn’t even be strong enough to formally charge someone in a criminal court.

Judges Charlesworth and Pillay asked #Gambia how the Court should treat the FFM’s evidence when the Court requires very strong proof, but #FFM used a lower standard of proof. #Myanmar then offered its own observations, especially in response to The Gambia’s answer.

That this is exactly why “beyond reasonable doubt” is important. Whether the Court calls it “fully convinced” or “beyond reasonable doubt,” allegations of genocide require strong evidence and a high standard of proof.

For example, Germany is historically known as a “nation of perpetrators” because of the Holocaust. Misjudging a state can harm millions of people, so the Court must be very certain before making such a finding.

The “fully convinced” or “beyond reasonable doubt” standard of proof #Gambia 1. proving genocide “beyond a reasonable doubt” is almost impossible. 2. argues that “beyond reasonable doubt” comes from criminal law, so this Court (which is not a criminal court) shouldn’t use it

@MofaJapan_en "…the role of the #UN forces in maintaining peace and stability…"? JOKE OF THE CENTURY. Might as well make a movie to win an Oscar. That fits the UN way more than reality.

@XHNews Destabilising Myanmar, invented a new ethnic identity to facilitate land grabs, demonising Buddhism, and now you’re asking Myanmar to give you money. Utterly useless. Shut it down.

@MofaJapan_en It just gives space for more violence. Even after many decades, this is something international actors still don’t seem to understand. Selective outrage isn’t peacebuilding. It’s hypocrisy, and it only keeps ordinary people suffering longer. So sick to see all of this.

@MofaJapan_en Myanmar has many armed groups, and violence is coming from all sides. Civilians are targeted simply for not supporting one group or for having a different view. Calling on only one side to stop, while staying quiet about the others, doesn’t protect anyone.

@Reuters "We took everyone’s money, achieved very little, destabilized smaller states, invented new ethnic identities to justify land grabs, and now we’d like more cash. " A good-for-nothing, corrupt organization. Time to shut it down.

@LewisJonathanE Gambia’s case isn’t just weak. It’s because there was no genocide in the first place. What’s really going on is political: Gambia, backed by the OIC, is creating a new ethnic identity to justify grabbing land from Myanmar under the guise of justice.

@FortifyRights So Myanmar scrutinizes the same reports the other side relies on, and that’s a problem now? Rejecting selective quoting is “inconsistency,” but selective quoting itself isn’t? The whataboutism here is honestly impressive.

On January 20, 2026, during proceedings in The Gambia v. Myanmar at the International Court of Justice, Judge Cleveland questioned Myanmar’s military junta over its inconsistent treatment of evidence. She noted the contradiction in Myanmar’s attempts to dismiss the credibility of human rights organizations—including @FortifyRights —simultaneously relying on those same organizations when their findings suited Myanmar’s legal arguments. The exchange exposed a core flaw in Myanmar’s defense. A state accused of genocide cannot reject evidence as unreliable when it is inconvenient and then invoke the very same sources to advance its narrative. Evidence collected by @FortifyRights points to a single conclusion: Genocide. The junta’s efforts to undermine the credibility of human rights documentation, rather than meaningfully address the substance of that evidence, underpins its inability to respond to the extensive, corroborated record of genocide against the Rohingya people.

@JMeservey The ICJ was intended to resolve *actual disputes* between States (see list). It has been badly abused, with these astroturfed, corrupt cases such as The Gambia vs. Myanmar and South Africa vs. Israel. This is a new breed of lawfare with foreign funding. icj-cij.org/list-of-all-ca…
