What is a good wedge shot? You likely have it all wrong...
So many golfers feel pressure to land the ball within a 10-foot circle around the hole. They often define success with an arbitrary distance that is likely way too difficult to achieve.
So what is a good wedge shot? Let’s look at what the pros are doing for some initial guidance.
If you are a tour player, you are world-class with a wedge. Even the “worst” performers around the green are at a level that normal golfers find difficult to comprehend.
From 10-20 yards, which is a relatively close shot, a typical tour player will average about 7 feet from the hole. Hardly a gimmie. From 20-30 yards, the average moves further to about 9 feet.
I can’t stress how impressive these numbers are.
But when we look at recreational golfers and their proximity numbers, the picture changes dramatically.
Here is a summary of performance by handicap level showing proximity to the hole and the likelihood of getting up and down:
No matter what level of golf you are playing, it’s very unrealistic to expect to land the ball within the 10-foot circle on average with greenside wedge play.
Of course, we’d love to have stress-free tap-ins for par, but golf doesn’t work that way.
Our ambitions can be higher than approach shots since we are much closer to the hole. At a minimum, getting the ball on the putting surface inside around 20 feet is a good shot for most golfers.
You’ve reduced your chances of making a double bogey quite dramatically at that point and also given yourself an opportunity to save par.
That number can be adjusted a bit based on your skill level and how close you are to the hole, but I believe it’s a good starting point.
So many golfers waste strokes around the greens because they fail to get the ball on the putting surface.
This is a mixture of skill deficits and sometimes poor decision-making.
Either way, if you were 25 yards away from the hole and landed the ball 15 feet from the pin, that’s an opportunity to embrace a good shot rather than feel frustrated you didn’t get that 5-footer for par.
