NEWS: Memphis HC Penny Hardaway is targeting current Alabama State HC Tony Madlock to be his associate head coach, per sources. Madlock - who already spent three years on Penny’s staff as an assistant - led ASU to their first ever NCAA tournament win in 2024-25. Known as a bulldog, Madlock has legit head coaching experience under his belt + Penny knows he can trust him, which makes him an attractive hire for Penny. Fits the mold of what you every HC wants at the associate head coaching spot. Nothing is finalized yet, but a deal could come together soon.

NEWS: Memphis Assistant Jermaine “Freaky JJ” Johnson has been FIRED, as expected. Mike Davis and Roy Rogers were also fired. There were no options for them to return, despite what was previously reported. Source adds that a GM is expected to be hired this week. Several candidates have been contacted, but one is a clear leader in the running.

A year after finishing 29-6 and winning the AAC title, Memphis finishes 13-19 — its worst season in over 50+ years. A disaster of a season is finally over. A lot of decisions will shake out over the next 24 hours or so — most importantly, Penny Hardaway’s future as head coach + assistant staff outlook.

From the coaching, roster building, on-court play, and home attendance — this season has been an utter failure. This is the worst Memphis team this century in Penny’s 8th season as HC, and there doesn’t seem to be any hope for next season: - Coaching staff is highly unqualified - very few big money boosters left - Apathy is at an all time high I think it’s clear what the board/AD need to do 🤷‍♂️

I think coaches at schools with a lot less prestige than the University of Memphis would get fired for this type of season. They have now secured the most losses the program has had in a single season since the 1969-1970 season.

Let’s not forget that preseason AAC favorites Memphis outspent the rest of the AAC by 2-3x this offseason + Penny declared it his “second most talented team.” Despite this, Memphis continues to reach new lows: - 12-15 overall (7-7 AAC) - active 4-game losing streak - historically low attendance - multiple in-season suspensions (1 player quit) And, pictured below is today’s attendance after a pretty heavily promoted “stripe out” game (Looks like at max 4k fans).

Ed Scott, you are on the clock my friend. If you have a singular care in the world for the health of this basketball program you will put an end to this. Memphis fans don’t deserve to be humiliated like this. If you care about this historic program… You will make the move.

NEWS: Memphis’ Hasan Abdul-Hakim is no longer a part of the team going forward, per source. Source adds: - Hasan refused to play against North Texas and was suspended indefinitely. - Last season at UTRGV, Hasan got into with a coach, packed his bags and left while the team was on a road trip. Per source, Zach Davis was initially suspended for being late to a team meeting. He met with Penny yesterday to determine his future. He was at practice today.

Memphis G Sincere Parker (@SincereParker8) was absolutely UNREAL in their road win over UAB: 40 PTS 14-20 FG 6-8 3PT 6 REB 2 AST Parker has now scored 20+ in 3 of his last 5 games. He looked like that SLU/McNeese player of old, aggressively getting to his spots and hitting some tough shots. Might be the best performance from a Memphis player since Kendric Davis in that AAC title game.

I didn’t have high expectations for this season, but I NEVER thought it would be this bad. Memphis just lost to Tulane (previously on a 5-game losing streak) at home. They are now 10-11. 5-4 in AAC play. Not to mention, the attendance is so bad that they’re moving everybody down to the lower bowl + giving out free tickets in the lower bowl to season ticket holders. There needs to be change this offseason.

Memphis - who was the preseason AAC favorite - has roughly 2x more NIL than any other team in the AAC. Struggling in non-conference play is one thing, but looking completely outmatched in AAC play with their resource supremacy is pathetic. The assistants are poor talent evaluators + developers that I have no faith in building a competitive roster. At the bare minimum, Penny must completely overhaul his staff IF he returns next season. Too much dead weight.

This version of Memphis Basketball is utterly unacceptable — especially in Penny Hardaway’s eight year as head coach. This is the product of an extremely poor talent evaluation in the transfer portal + a horrific coaching job this season from Penny/staff. Pathetic.

I speak for 95% of the Memphis fanbase when I say this: This is the least interested/disconnected that I have been in Memphis Basketball since the Tubby Smith era. Unfortunately, Jeff Goodman is right. Memphis and Penny Hardaway need to have a serious conversation about if he should return as the HC next season.
Jeff Goodman@GoodmanHoops

After a season in which I ate my words on Penny Hardaway, I’m back to asking the same question I have been asking for few years. Is Penny the right guy to lead this Memphis program going forward?

Memphis G Curtis Givens III (@lilcurtis_3) has looked very good his last two games since returning from his absence. 18 PPG 55% 3PT (6-11) 59% FG (13-22) CG3 is making a great case to be inserted back into the starting lineup. Having another ball handler on the court next to Dug that can score and facilitate takes a lot of pressure off of him. Great two games for Givens.
Hitmen Hoops@HitmenHoops

Memphis F Ashton Hardaway (@ash_hardaway ) has quietly put together two good games in a row and looks to be settling in to a much-needed catch-and-shoot role for Memphis. 13 PPG 5.5 RPG 45% 3PG (5-11) 2.5 SPG 28 MPG Hardaway is becoming the guy that Memphis can rely on to consistently make outside shots - something that they have needed all season. Good last two games from Ashton, who looks to be gaining confidence out there as well.

After losing to a very mid Mississippi State team, Memphis just picked up their third loss in a row. Memphis moves to 4-7. A horrible start to the season so far for Penny Hardaway and the Tigers. Another extremely sloppy game offensively for Memphis, who has yet to find any sort of identity.

One of the few positives for Memphis lately has been the play of 6’8” wing/F Hasan Abdul Hakim. His last two games against #11 Louisville and #13 Vanderbilt: 15.5 PPG 7 RPG 2.5 SPG 57% FG 50% 3PT Hasan has been a very disruptive defender, on top of his efficient offensive production. Very good athlete who can play the 3-5. Will never have to question his energy. Abdul Hakim has looked like the best player on the court for Memphis since he returned
Hitmen Hoops@HitmenHoops

Memphis follows up a 26-point road loss to Louisville with another disappointing home loss to Vanderbilt. They are abysmal in the halfcourt offensively + sloppy with the ball + make way too many dumb decisions. Memphis moves to 4-6, with hardly any good win opportunities left. The effort is very inconsistent and the shotmaking just isn’t there. It’s looking like Memphis’ NCAA at-large tourney hopes are gone.

All I have to say for the people that genuinely believe Penny shouldn’t be the coach here any longer… Careful. What. You. Wish. For. Not as enticing of a job as it used to be. Fans have final four expectations while the sitting coach has bubble resources. Oh, and the sitting coach is the schools most near and dear alumnus. Things will get even uglier when Penny decides to hang it up.
