@Dave_Robinson17 @Doug_Thonus Youre a bad team and new gm. Before: lose on purpose, get a star, build around a star. Now: acquire draft assets to give better odds down the line, dont bust your lottery picks, become mediocre, build a culture of effort, draft the star.

@TikiLaundry @Doug_Thonus The problem is there is no “more difficult avenue” for most teams. They will just never get better or they will trade all the draft capital possible for a star. And if the star was available for trade you could imagine what type of star it is.

New lottery system fixes tanking but over time is likely to create a near permanent underclass

@Dave_Robinson17 @Doug_Thonus Teams will have to do a better job at hiring great gms and having a great scouting departments. Kings are not bad bc they havent been awarded the 1.01. Theyre bad bc of bad mgmt. they passed on luka, traded hali, traded fox, etc.

@Dave_Robinson17 @Doug_Thonus And thats all it is, your belief. The reality, however, is that if you actually enjoy watching basketball then tanking made it unwatchable. Now teams will have to find a more difficult avenue to get better than just “lets lose as many games as possible” and thats a good thing.

@TikiLaundry @Doug_Thonus Getting a high draft pick is how most competitors are made and it’s the quickest way to rebuild. I’m not saying lose on purpose but i believe the worst teams need the best chance to become good again. I don’t think you should award teams who are always in the middle.

@Dave_Robinson17 @Doug_Thonus LOL the whole point is to not tank but here you are arguing for tanking. You a kings fan bro? You just don’t get to lose on purpose and sit half your roster for half the season anymore to get the best lottery odds.

@TikiLaundry @Doug_Thonus Also it would take multiple years of taking just good players to end up having a roster like the Heat. Then and only then could you have a chance of getting a high pick and now if you get a high pick you have to wait a couple years for him to develop. This extend rebuild times

@Dave_Robinson17 @Doug_Thonus Parity is less important than the integrity of the game being violated bc of tanking. Its not like you cant become a good team anymore. Youre just not getting rewarded with the best gifts when you get the worse grades in school.

@Dave_Robinson17 @Doug_Thonus Cool. So grab a good player, become mediocre, have better odds, draft a better player following drafts. Just bc you’re the worst team does not mean you deserve the best pick.

@DamienPetersNBA Just draft good players in the lottery and acquire draft assets. They will be mediocre and have better lottery odds in the future. In return the the nba is better inmediately bc of no tanking. Just bc youre the worst team does not mean you deserve the best pick

The underlying problem with the anti-tanking conversation is no one wants to admit that there are genuinely bad teams in the NBA that desperately need star power. We are going to sit here in 12 months time and have to accept that the three worst teams (who be will genuinely bad) have less of a chance at getting the number 1 pick. I’m all for rule amendments, but these teams need help.

@Doug_Thonus @rightfieldsucks Why are teams fucked just bc they dont get a top 4 pick? If you cant land a stud with 1.09 then thats a gm problem not a lottery problem. If you cant sell an expiring contract for future picks then thats a gm problem as well.

Hard to make good trades when you are bad because you don't have good assets, and since getting worse hurts you more, you can't give up what little you have. Hard to sign good players when you are a bad team no one wants to play for, so you have to overpay which also encourages bad contracts. You are describing a path of saying "well, it's not impossible to improve" and it isn't, but it's really, really hard already, and now it's an order of magnitude harder / luck reliant. And again, I'm not saying you had to leave the old system in place, but there were many better options to fix tanking that weren't going to have this negative an impact on parity. There's no plausible logical reason to give the bottom 3 teams WORSE odds than 4-10. They're already fucked, and because you're drawing all picks, they have zero incentive to be in the bottom 3 already, they don't need greater incentive to not be in the bottom 3. If you just made the odds even across the board it would be much better and simpler.

@Doug_Thonus @rightfieldsucks If you are a franchise in a bad position but have a good gm 2 things will happen: 1. He will make good trades to improve assets 2. He should be able to draft good players despite not having a top 4 pick.

@rightfieldsucks Better or worse depends what you care about more, but I think there were plenty of options to fix tanking without absolutely fucking the bad franchises.

What I would like to know is what, if anything, the NBA plans to do to help organically bad teams improve in non-draft related ways. Free agency is dead and that's jacked up the price on veteran trades. How do you balance that reality with all of this moralizing over tanking?
Shams Charania@ShamsCharania

NBA commissioner Adam Silver said on a recent Competition Committee call, according to sources: "We should have a system where you should hate to lose. It shouldn't be a badge of honor. Losing should be uncomfortable." The new change is not as drastic as relegation to a lower league -- but a penalty for being at the bottom. Many league executives understand this may be an overcorrection, but one the majority believes is necessary.
