@DungenessBO Much less species diversity here at St Leonards this morning but 1000+ Gannets & 2000 Herring Gulls East, which presumably turned round or stopped moving before reaching you!
Now moved down to live in St Leonards-on-sea, E Sussex and had an unexpected sighting yesterday - an unidentified dragonfly flying in off the sea and disappearing inland! Hawker-shaped abdomen and medium-sized but that's it!
Ecstatic to see dolphins not too far off Chesil beach at Abbotsbury this afternoon! 🐬🐬🐬
Seemed to be 5 or 10 of them, hard to tell, but they swam towards Portland and then seemed to head out to sea 🤩 #Chesil#Dolphins
@LizLouise12 I would say it is O. repens. The first photo shows that most of the plant is sprawling, not erect; the leaves are blunt or emarginate, not pointed; the stems appear to be hairy all round, not with 2 lines of hairs; and the flowers are pink, rather than red-pink.
Please does anyone have any thoughts on this Restharrow (Ononis) seen nr Hereford? I can persuade myself it’s O. spinosa or O. repens. Annoyingly I didn’t take any measurements ☹️
Swift calamities - the better weather has led to an increase in prospecting birds (‘bangers’) and as a consequence fights in boxes. Unfortunately this meant we lost both an egg & a newly hatched chick yesterday. While broken eggs are an annual event it’s unusual to lose a chick
@JohnBryant1404@NTGates I fully agree with this sentiment. The music is often so loud that it is grating and drowning David's commentary and, even more important, some of the sounds of the animals being filmed and other nearby wildlife.
@NTGates Please do not spoil wildlife/nature programmes by playing background music. Nature is dramatic enough without the need for music - and of course you don't play music when you are seeing it for real rather than on the telly.
Photo from Camber, E Sussex, 24 February. It is currently reported as a Scaup but I am wondering whether the extent of black on the bill tip indicates that is a hybrid. No other features seem to suggest this.
So, I need to learn grasses! 😬…
I was wondering if anyone could direct me towards the best book for a beginner to use? or one that’s great to use out in the field. Many thanks.
I’ve drawn this butterfly and I can’t decide if painting it in watercolour and/or adding gold leaf or gold pen will make it better or worse! Any thoughts appreciated! 🦋✨
@LeyshonOwen@BSBIbotany@DungenessBO 'Naturalised' suggests it is established whereas it may just be a one-off? I have seen it there before on the house side of the road where I assumed it was planted.
Woad (Isatis tinctoria) has escaped one of the gardens on Dungeness and is now naturalised on the other side of the road this spring
@BSBIbotany@DungenessBO@TimInskipp
While working on the boardwalk on Dungeness NNR this lunchtime with @JacTurner_Moss - he found Navelwort (Umbilicus rupestris) poking out between the boards.
New for Dungeness.
@BSBIbotany@DungenessBO@TimInskipp
@BrianLaney2@BSBIbotany Seen it in a few places in Hastings & St Leonard's in recent years though now decreased, at least partly through being sprayed.
@BSBIbotany Common purslane Portulaca oleracea several plants by wall near sea front Hastings in Sussex. I've only seen this species once in Northants in an allotment.
Was unable to go out today so spent some time looking out the window! 34 spp in 3 hrs, including 24 Common Cranes, Peregrine, 30 Whoopers & 2 Ruff ebird.org/checklist/S963…
Little surprised to find Knotted Pearlwort growing at Dungeness today.
Although common on the RSPB reserve, I'm not sure it's been seen recently on the Estate.

@surreywallcreep Steve, if you do decide to chuck them please throw them my way. I still use them and can possibly revive them especially the larger stylus sizes.
