After a two-year battle with cancer, Ilona Löwen passed away this morning, March 9, 2026. We grieve alongside Edu and all those impacted by this loss and ask the CITY community to keep them in your prayers during this difficult time. Ilona was a beautiful example of love, humility, and kindness and will be deeply missed. A message from the Löwen’s Pastor, Marc Sikma: Edu and Ilona built their life on faith in Christ, and we find comfort in knowing Ilona’s suffering is over and that she is now in the eternal presence of her Savior.

@just_wasik @MLSist Yes exactly.. most sports were still popular but then you throw in the 1950 World Cup team that beat England. 5 of the starting 11 were from what’s still called “ the hill” which is where all the Italians lived

@TimKellyGK @MLSist So it was the athletic culture at schools. For some reason, soccer caught on at the school level in St Louis. Got it

If you spend any time at all in St. Louis, it becomes so apparent so quickly why soccer exploded here in the early 20th century and why it’s still a fundamental part of the city’s identity. It’s something you can say for so few places in this country. Respect.

@just_wasik @MLSist It was all the Catholic grade schools that all had soccer teams. All those catholic grade schools were feeders for the high schools. Which leads into a whole other topic of the St. Louis question “ where did you go to high school”.

@TimKellyGK @MLSist Thanks for sharing that insight. There were immigrants in a lot of other cities, but soccer didn’t click like it did in STL. Was there something about the specific immigrant groups that had them gravitate to soccer? Was it just that HS league?

@just_wasik @MLSist Before the academy system. It was quite normal to have 4-5k watching a local high school games. Rivalries was a big deal here and fueled growth. . You would see it at the high school, club and even at siue and SLU in the 70’s/80’s.

@just_wasik @MLSist First the all the immigrants that moved to our city. Specifically the Italians. A huge impact was catholic school and the league which we called ..cyc. Still in existence today. That then created great rivalries between high schools , and then the north and south of the area.

My Dad passed last Thursday. I never thought it would be so hard to see him go. He was old school…Strong, Tough as nails, very direct, a natural born leader, a bit wild😃, enjoyed life, extremely loyal to his family / friends & loving. He will be sorely missed. Love you Dad❤️🙏
