Turku Castle. Situated in Turku, Finlands oldest city. Founded in late 13th century it is one of the oldest (if not the oldest) building in Finland that is currently in use.

@phl43 You can get very far in life by simply trying out a lot of things and backtracking if something doesn't work but perhaps this isn't the best modus operandi in international relations and war.

@TotemoMomoTaro @PAstynome The effects of the gerontocracy are underappreciated despite the fertility discourse. You need a critical mass of young people to absorb new ideas while growing up, to innovate and to take risks. Many problems in old countries are downstream from that.

@TimRuhr @PAstynome The most common reply in Japan to these type of questions is ‘dakara’ or ‘because that’s the way it is’. No further explanation will be provided. (It’s ageism)

@PAstynome It's really striking to look at trade in East Asia where the top goods are chips, machines and inputs and then you look at the Nordics and they trade fish, electricity and refined petroleum lol

South Korea is now the biggest source of Taiwan’s trade deficit all due to a single product, HBM.

@PAstynome Kekkonen is living a funny afterlife today. I've seen him printed on credit cards, Lidl used a comic-style puppet of him in ads and he's featured even in kids' stories (I've heard kids chant his name like in the stories). His hat has become somewhat iconic, too.

The Cold War just had an embarrassment of riches when it came to brilliant politicians and bureaucrats. You even had a small country like Finland produce a world class politician/diplomat (Urho Kekkonen).
Murtaza Hussain@MazMHussain

The people who are running the American empire today have a tremendous amount of hubris but they are just inheriting something that other more competent people in the past built and that they could clearly never recreate nor apparently even maintain.

@PAstynome You'd think that the solution is obvious once you observed for a while that underpaid talented people were systematically poached and contributed to the rise of your rivals but inertia is truly a difficult beast to slay. Applies in all domains and all of history.

@PAstynome Devco is one of the main owners, an investment company of Matti Alahuhta who is a Nokia veteran and the former successful CEO of Kone. They own and grow other Finnish companies, too. It's one of those rare cases where Finnish elites are doing the right thing. Too few of them.

Bluefors is a Finnish cryogenics company that has a dominant market share in building the ultra low temperature refrigeration systems (at close to absolute zero) that make quantum computing possible. It’s one of Finland’s hidden champions.

Not unrelated, Finland is awash with small businesses that don't go with the times and Finns are underpaid (and overtaxed) relative to their peers so brain drain and emigration remain problems.

@TimRuhr Conservatism due to the lost decade and low labor mobility. This is why the stock market punishes Japanese companies and give them a low valuation. The government is trying to tackle this cash hoarding but time will tell if they are successful.

@ArttuY The duunari vote is a minor issue for the NCP anyway. Low/mid-earning white-collars in business and QUANGOs have plenty of reasons to prefer the NCP over the other options.

@ArttuY Yeah but they are still getting something out of the NCP vote. Not as much as the top earners but still. It's not less irrational than duunarit voting SDP. They offer nothing in terms of taxation and socioeconomic similarities. Only union issues but even here there's a huge rift.

The government's internal conflict about the inheritance tax is interesting to observe. Looking at the polls, the NCP correctly assumes that it's very unlikely that they can get this through in the next government. The last chance is now. PS is publicly driving its price high.

@KuviacM I'm not kidding. German corporate culture is very different and the Finnish commando approach doesn't work at all. It won't be easy for Kone to integrate a German company of almost the same size.

@TimRuhr I know this "call Fortum" thing is at least in part jest But I do feel our corporations and the people in them should be far more human to each other, and actually talk and reflect on things

Kone reportedly again tries to buy TK Elevator, the former elevator unit of ThyssenKrupp. They bid 17 billion last time and lost to PE firms. Now the price is 25 billion. I hope they know that they are doing. That's a lot of money and M&A is difficult. hs.fi/visio/art-2000…
