@JosephKahn It's interesting that Lifeforce from a few years later has a lot of style very similar to Poltergeist, and by the way has some of the best anamorphic blocking and camera movement of any movie (also JDC scope). Strobes & lens flares never looked scarier than on these films.

I am a huge Spielberg nerd, and also a Tobe Hooper fan (especially Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2). So, knowing both styles in and out, I say this with full conviction and authority: Spielberg directed Poltergeist.

Produced by George Duke, with funky analogue synthesisers. He used a similar bassline on another tune from the same year: youtube.com/watch?v=aBUzf3…

Deniece Williams began a two week run at #1 on the U.S. Billboard singles chart with "Let's Hear it for the Boy" on this day in 1984. The second #1 single from the bestselling "Footloose" soundtrack, "Let's Hear it for the Boy" would also be nominated for an Academy Award and two Grammy Awards. The popular song was written by Dean Pitchford and Tom Snow (who also wrote "Footloose"), with background vocals performed by future Boy Meets Girl members George Merrill and Shannon Rubicon.

@agraphafx The miniature work is tremendous. My brain cannot accept this is a model shot and apparently it took about 50 takes to get right.

@harleyskooky Interesting that most of these images across both of these Schumacher & Burton posts are matte paintings (both traditional & digital). There's something that really resonates about a painted depiction of Gotham city. Perhaps it's the 2D roots & the total control of composition.

I had not seen this great photo before. The 1/32 scale, 40 foot long set of Gotham City, used for motion control photography. 1/32 is a common scale for mass produced model & toy cars; many were purchased & painted for this. Visual Effects by Meddings Magic Camera Company.

Behind The Scenes Photo from Batman (1989), showing an aerial view of the miniature set for Gotham City. This is such an incredible photo of an equally incredible miniature set.

@jefftimeseleven @BodySnatchers79 The character seems to be the same, and filmed from the exact same angle with the same lighting (look at the picture frame in the background below) . However, it looks like this was a different puppet with a different facial expression & not one of the four used in the film.

@BobbyCastro1994 Some of the Lalo Schifrin-does-synthpop music in this is incredibly catchy, especially the makeover montage.

@agraphafx I remember the VHS pan and scanning would slide and crop all over the frame, especially during the dissolve montages.

@MuseZack The days when the bare minimum expectation was a directors commentary, original trailers and a new making of documentary or the 16mm original Making Of.

I never understood why they got the cast of Predator 2 to promote the film posing like the Ghostbusters.

@ktrn761 @StephenSeanFord About 60% of this Gotham City low angle is a (pre-digital) matte painting, as the set was only 2-3 stories high. It just goes to show that when combined with good visual effects, you can make a good backlot set look like anywhere.
